Bio

I earned a BA in physics from Williams College, an MPhil in history and philosophy of science from the University of Cambridge, and a MSci and a PhD in physics from the University of California, Davis. I held postdoctoral fellowships at Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen and Bard College and a visiting assistant professorship at Bucknell University. I primarily research the causal dynamical triangulations approach to quantum gravity, but I have interests throughout the foundations of physics.

At the University of California, Davis I taught ten quarters of discussion-lab sections for the nonmajors' introductory physics course, and I served as teaching assistant for several undergraduate and graduate courses. At Bard College I taught introductory physics, mathematical methods of physics, and quantum mechanics. At Bucknell University I taught problem sessions and laboratories for introductory physics, a nonmajors' course on timekeeping, and quantum mechanics. I have also advised eight undergraduate research projects and three senior undergraduate projects. Four of these collaborations have resulted in publications, and four of my students have pursued graduate degrees in theoretical physics, one of whom is now a staff researcher in theoretical astrophysics and one of whom is now a postdoctoral researcher in theoretical nuclear physics.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching and mentoring physics students, particularly in one-on-one and small-group settings. In these settings students learn more thoroughly by actively engaging and applying physics concepts, and I teach more effectively by addressing the specific needs of particular students. When teaching physics, I aim foremost to instill a thorough comprehension of the concepts underlying the physics that my students are learning. I want my students to understand how physics describes a breathtaking array of phenomena on a foundation constructed from a few core concepts. I match rigorous instruction with an easygoing temperament, prodigious patience, and inclusive sensitivity.

great tutor always goes the extra mile

Joshua is an excellent tutor and is always helpful. He takes time to work through problems and explain the theory behind the answer

Joshua is extremely helpful!

Joshua continues to be a superb tutor. He works with me to understand the material and helps me research aspects that I don’t understand. I’m in a graduate program for Quantum Computing which means a lot of the subject had been explored in the last 20 years. Joshua goes above and beyond every time to make sure I have a firm grasp on the lesson. I highly recommend him.

Joshua is extremely helpful!

I was worried about finding a tutor for my masters program but Joshua has been excellent. I’m getting my MS in Quantum Information Science and it involves a lot of high level math and quantum mechanics so I didn’t know how many tutors cover material this advanced. After doing some searching, I found there were some but not a lot. Even so, I wasn’t sure how helpful they would be. Joshua was such a relief. Coming from a background in computer science, I felt behind at the start of the first week of my MS program. One session with Joshua and he caught me up on all the material I didn’t know. I highly recommend him to anyone who’s looking for help with advanced topics!

Classical Mechanics_Resistive force

Joshua helped me with HW#02. He went over the concept in details and showed me how to solve the problems. He is a wonderful teacher with a lot passion for physics. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

Great!

Thanks for your help with high school physics! The session went well and I'll be setting up regular weekly tutoring sessions with Joshua. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with Joshua.

Patient and concise!

Joshua is absolutely great -- he took the time to make sure I understood whatever I was asking him about. He reverse engineered solutions from theory he explained from first principles, which felt very natural to follow. Thanks!

Very helpful Sessions!

Joshua helped me with my difficult college physics class (E&M and circuits). He broke difficult concepts in a way that is easier to understand. He is also a very nice and understanding teacher who cares about his students. I am grateful for all his help in physics. Thank you very much Joshua!
