About Linda

I have recently moved to Longmont and hope to continue tutoring high school and/or college students. I taught high school English for 25 years with the last 10 years teaching English to all International Baccalaureate seniors. During the 25 years I taught regular, honors, college-prep, advanced placement, and International Baccalaureate students. Since retiring I have had private tutoring students and also was the English tutor for the Wichita State University athletes.

I especially try to simplify the teaching of grammar, punctuation, and writing to make the concepts as easy as possible to understand. I can help with writing introductions with clear thesis statements, well-organized and developed paragraphs with textual support, effective conclusions, in-text MLA citations and works cited pages; research including use of scholarly, peer-reviewed research sources; and proofreading. I can offer assistance with English papers including narrative, persuasive/argumentative, definition, cause/effect, comparison/contrast, research, analysis, argumentative, and literature analysis. I can also work with students to prepare them for taking the ACT, SAT, PSAT, or TOEFL exams.

I am happy to offer help with particular assignments or papers or to plan an on-going approach to working on areas such as grammar, punctuation, writing, etc. I am open to single appointments or long-term tutoring.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

As a retired high school teacher, I would be happy to help you prepare for the ACT test - During my teaching years, I taught a semester course called ACT Prep, and I know several tips to help you. I can share several time-saving tips and other test-taking strategies for both the multiple choice section and the essay.

English

I taught high school English for 25 years and have tutored English, especially writing, for the past 10 years. I have worked with regular, honors, advanced placement, International Baccalaureate, and university students. My experience has provided me the skills and techniques to make difficult concepts easier and clearer. I am comfortable teaching grammar, literature, and writing.

Grammar

I love teaching grammar and have been successful in teaching students everything from the basic parts of speech to the more sophisticated parts of the sentence, usage issues, punctuation, etc. I pride myself in working successfully with students who have been confused by earlier explanations of grammar. I can also focus on a specific mechanics area such as comma or semicolon usage.

Literature

As a former high school English teacher and college level tutor, I have experience teaching a wide variety of literary concepts including literary terms related to poetry, novels, drama, and short stories. I have taught numerous Shakespeare plays to students ranging from regular freshmen through advanced placement and International Baccalaureate seniors. I can assist with the analysis of literature and papers related to literature.

Writing

As a former high school English teacher and college level and high school tutor, I can help students master writing effective, organized paragraphs to writing effective multiple paragraph argument/persuasive, narratives, comparison contrast, cause-effect, analysis, and research papers. I can also help with correctly managing sources for papers with MLA and APA formats. Another service I can provide is the proofreading of papers prior to their submission.
