University of Utah (Statistics)
University of Utah (Master's)
I have over 20 years of REAL experience in the field of statistics. When I first started, statistics was extremely difficult. Almost like a foreign language. Through both my job as well as teaching, I understand not only statistical applications, but HOW to best teach the subject to people. I have taught at the University of Utah as well as Front Range Junior College in Longmont Colorado. I understand that people learn differently, and part of my job as a tutor is to quickly figure out the best approach, and help you learn the way you learn best. I can apply statistics because I'm a real practitioner. I would be willing to meet in Longmont or Boulder, preferably in a coffee house.

Happy to tutor an additional person (group size of 2) for no additional charge.
Math has always been my worst subject, and when I started statistics, it truly felt like a foreign language. A month or so in to the semester a classmate and I were at what felt like rock bottom. We understood very little and just couldn't apply the few things that we did grasp. We found Jim on WyzAnt and he was a Godsend!!! He is easy to schedule sessions with, has a working knowledge of the subject, and most importantly was patient and genuine with us. He broke things down in such a way that made it easy to understand, and you can tell he truly enjoys the subject, which I believe makes him a great tutor. Our grades greatly improved and we passed the course with flying colors! If you are struggling, need someone who will listen to your needs/concerns, and are seeking an overall fantastic tutor, Jim is your guy!
We've started with an initial meeting to walk through curriculum, assignment design, and our work schedules to establish how to proceed with sessions needed. Jim is motivational and has a wealth of expertise in statistics. I trust he will help me work through a very rigorous 6-Week course. No easy feat with a student who seriously struggles with complicated algebraic based statistics.
Anyone out there struggling with stats, get in touch with Jim. He breaks the info down so it's easy to understand. I am taking this course as part of my RN-BSN program and without Jim's help I would frustrated and lost. Thanks Jim!!
I worked with Jim for two months. He helped me with a very difficult accelerated math class. The class included statistics, probability, counting, graph/set theory, consumer mathematics, voting mathematics, just to name a few of the topics he helped me with. Jim is very patient we had a lot to cover in the two months of my class. I met with Jim twice a week for eight weeks. If it wasn't for his help and guidance I would have never passed my class. I can honestly say Jim did a better job then my professor did explaining the topics. He explained the topics in a way I could understand. He uses real life examples to help you understand the topics. One very valuable thing he does is give you problems to solve after he explains concepts. This way during our session he made sure I got the concepts. He goes over the material until you understand it. I would recommend Jim as a tutor. He goes above and beyond to make sure you are successful in your class. He is a great guy who is passionate about tutoring and math. If you need help with any of the concepts I listed above he is the perfect tutor for you.
I have always had a hard time with math, and have not taken a math class in 6 years, so I was very nervous about passing the math portion of my praxis exam. I am so grateful to Jim, who invested himself in my success and took the time to find a way to explain difficult topics to me in a way that I could understand.
I have met with Jim two times now and after both sessions I feel like I can handle statistics instead of being completely scared of it! I am taking my course online so I miss out on the face to face interaction or at least having someone explain a little more what each concept is trying to say. Jim is great at answering my questions and also with providing me other examples that help explain the concept from different angles. You can tell that he knows what he is talking about and is very knowledgeable on the subject and some times that can back fire from a beginner student perspective because the information isn't brought down to the beginner level. He makes it very palatable while not making me feel like I am being talked down to.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a B.S. degree in Mathematics, and M.S. degree in Mathematical Statistics with over 21 years of practical experience in actually using mathematics and statistics in industry. This corresponds well with the math portion of Praxis (number theory, measurement, probability, algegra, geometry, reasoning, etc), In addition, I have tutored at least 40 students over the years and have taught approximately 20 university classes and have gained insight into various student learning methods. Lastly, my ability to teach adults in mathematics (especially Praxis, which deals with practical adult learning) is the 21 years of consulting with engineers, financial professionals, nurses, and other professionals. I believe this will translate well to tutoring in the mathematics portion of Praxis.
I have an MS degree in Mathematical statistics and over 23 years of experience using this subject in industry. I know how to make abstract topics very practical and have done this through both training engineers as well as high school and college students.
