Hello! Growing up in a house with a chemical engineer sparked my love and passion for science. I originally planned on using my science background to clean up water pollution from mining activities; however, I decided to become a high school teacher.

I have a very interdisciplinary science background which allows me to use examples from every day life in order to help students understand abstract scientific concepts. I also enjoy many hobbies: cooking, sourdough bread baking, coffee roasting, soap making, and vegetable fermentation which all involve chemistry. I love the outdoors and spend a lot of time camping and fly fishing. I enjoy tying my own flies and exploring Colorado and the west for all that it has to offer.
I have been teaching high school science since 2001. I began my career at Kennedy high school in Denver Public schools and then moved on to Cherry Creek high school. I have been teaching teaching Advanced Placement (AP) chemistry and honors chemistry for most of my career. My teaching has always involved helping students on a 1:1 basis or even in small group settings so I have a wealth of tutoring experience. I also worked as a tutor for many years mainly tutoring college level chemistry students but also algebra and Spanish.

Some of my interest and hobbies that I could always help you with: Cooking, soap making, coffee roasting, camping, hunting, guitar, scuba diving

I enjoy working with people and seeing them grow. The moment when a student "gets" something is special. I am patient and have many different ways of explaining difficult concepts. I have a very Socratic approach to teaching which involves asking many questions in order to help independent thinking. I am a life-long learner and wish the same for my students. I always look for suggestions from students and parents about how to best help a tutee.

I welcome the opportunity to help you achieve whatever your goals might be. I can be flexible with my scheduling.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

As a scientist and science teacher I have used algebra quite extensively. Algebra is absolutely necessary for success in quantitative chemistry so it is a subject I know well. I have tutored students in math and also teach my students math during class if necessary.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have been teaching high school chemistry for 20 years. During my career I have taught all levels of chemistry: college prep, honors, and advanced placement. I spent four years working for the college board as an AP reader. This position allowed me to be part of the team of college professors and teachers responsible for grading the free response portion of the AP chemistry tests.
Chess

Chess

I learned how to play chess in seventh grade. It’s a game that I have loved all of my life mainly for the challenge. I have an extensive library of chess books which I used to improve the chess playing abilities of my club members. I play chess on a regular basis, and I am familiar with opening theory and endgame theory.
Cooking

Cooking

I grew up in a family of foodies, worked in multiple restaurants, and my parents owned 3 restaurants at one point. I have loved to cook since I was young. I am not afraid to do anything in the kitchen. I make my own sourdough bread from a culture of yeast I grew from organic grapes. I ferment my own vegetables to produce natural pickles. I also have used Japanese nuka pot techniques for pickling in rice bran. I have been roasting my own coffee for 20 years. This is all in addition to my every day cooking. I love to souse vide, air-fry, make espresso drinks, bake, saute, braise, grill, you name it. I can pretty much cook about anything out there. As someone with a science background, recipes are easy to follow. I understand a lot of the scientific concepts involved in cooking which also helps. I have worked in laboratories for years which also makes working in a kitchen second nature. Although I haven't brewed in a while, I did make my own beer for years and won many awards at local homebrew competitions. I am probably more passionate about cooking than anything else in my life.
Ecology

Ecology

I have a degree in environmental geology which I used to further my education. I received a full teaching assistantship at the Colorado school of mines where I worked on a masters in aqueous geochemistry applied to mine drainage remediation.
GED

GED

I came into teaching through a non-traditional pathway. I have a degree in science I did research as a graduate student at the United States Geological Survey while attending the Colorado School of Mines. As a scientist I had to use all skills that students learn in high school: reading, writing, arithmetic, and communication. I have a good grasp on high school material and can definitely help you with your goal of obtaining your GED.
Geology

Geology

I have a degree in geology from Ohio University which allowed me to earn a full assistantship at the Colorado School of Mines where I studied aqueous geochemistry.
Physical Science

Physical Science

I have been teaching high school chemistry for 20 years. During my career I have taught all levels of chemistry: college prep, honors, and advanced placement. I spent four years working for the college board as an AP reader. Spanish

Spanish

I studied Spanish for four years in high school and also took a little in college. I married a woman from Mexico and we spent almost 20 years together. She did not speak English. Denver public schools approved me to teach science classes in Spanish. I took a reading writing and speaking test for them and scored a 4 1/2 out of five which put me at native speaker status. My son Brandon is bilingual and attends a bilingual school.

Responsive and deeply knowledgable with just the right skill set a student needs

We reached out to Jeremy last minute for a prep session for an upcoming Quiz. My son did not do well on the recent Test and some of that material was being assessed again. My son spent one hour with Jeremy going over the concepts on the worksheets. He said that Jeremy not only walked him through how to solve the calculations but gave him thoughtful advice on what it takes to be a strong chemistry student. My son just got his grade back and received a full 100% on the Quiz. THANK YOU, Jeremy! We look forward to scheduling more sessions soon.

A Year of Chemistry Success

Jeremy has been amazing for our son throughout this entire AP Chemistry year. From the very first unit, our son maintained solid A grades (above 90%). We tried a few other tutors due to scheduling issues, but our son always wanted to go back to Jeremy because his explanations are so clear and easy to understand. He always comes prepared with just the right materials for whatever they're working on. In the final month before the AP exam, Jeremy was a wonderful resource for reviewing all the important topics and explaining concepts that were still unclear. Our son felt really prepared and confident going into the test. It was such a relief to see him come back from the exam yesterday with a smile on his face! Jeremy, we can't thank you enough for all your help this year!

Very knowledgeable and excellent tutor

Jeremy knows high school chemistry very well. My son wants to skip Honor Chemistry and directly get into AP-level Chemistry. Jeremy met with him once a week and he explained complicated topics in a Clear and straightforward way. And my son successfully passed the Honor Chemistry test within a few months. Jeremy did an excellent job!

Tutoring treasure!

Jeremy is an Angel! I was searching for a geochemistry tutor for months and he was the only person to properly help me in short notice! He was very clear in his teachings and provided easier methods to resolve my questions. He is a true professional in his field and with his help I not only passed my class but genuinely understood the concepts presented to me. I can not thank him enough for the time and effort he put into assisting me! I wish I consulted him sooner!!!!

Super helpful and available!

My son got really behind in AP Chem due to an illness. Jeremy met with him multiple times and worked with him to get caught up. He made himself available (even on a holiday!) and was super helpful to my very picky 17 year old.
