Bio

I have been an academic tutor for the past 8 years, and a college counselor for the past 4. My students have found meaningful success in all areas of the K-12 curriculum, especially in the college application and preparation process.

All my test-taking students have raised their standardized test scores by significant margins, whether it be the SAT, ACT, ISEE, SAT, AP Exams or SAT subject tests. 50th percentile scorers leap to the 75th percentile, 80th to the 90th, 95th to the 99th, and so...

50th percentile scorers leap to the 75th percentile, 80th to the 90th, 95th to the 99th, and so on. My approach is straightforward, measurable, realistic, and about as fun as tutoring can be :).

As an academic tutor, I have helped struggling students find simplicity in Calculus, Geometry and Trigonometry, and I have guided others through great works of literature for English class or difficult essays for History. My insights on effective study skills and academic stress management have been particularly helpful for high-performing students with packed schedules, and especially for those with learning differences or neurodivergence.

My favorite part of my job, meanwhile, is to help kids find, apply to, and get into the colleges of their dreams. As a College Counselor, I treat the college application process as a creative rite of passage, and give students individualized writing assignments and research projects to discover something meaningful and singular about their ambitions and dreams.

My approach to the college essay is especially effective. It’s a simple, dialogue-driven process that frees students up to write about what really matters, and learn something real about themselves. My students have found that it eases a lot of stress, and 85% of them over the past 5 years have gotten into their top choices. All of them were accepted to one of their top 3. They include schools like Cornell University, Amherst College, Vanderbilt and Middlebury, just to name a few.

So how will your college application stand out from the rest? The answer is deceptively obvious: write an essay that no one else could possibly write.

Prepping for the SAT or ACT can be as easy as a daily crossword puzzle or sudoku, and I like to teach it that way. Armed with the right test-taking strategies, the right homework drills, and the right mindset, any student can reach the highest score that reflect their potential. My lesson plan is designed to cultivate each in all my students. I first cut my teeth as an SAT/ACT tutor at the elite test prep company, Compass Education. Since then, I have worked as a freelance tutor, expanding my practice to all aspects of college prep. Over the years, I’ve worked with over a hundred students, and have accommodated a wide range of learning differences and styles. My methods have consistently helped high-school juniors and seniors increase their test scores by significant margins -- 50th percentile scorers into the 70th, 75th to the 85th, and 90th to the high 90s are common examples. I am also formally trained in standardized subject tests and AP Exams (Math, World History, US History, and Literature), and have helped younger students achieve the same results with the SSAT.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have been a math tutor for the past 7 years, and have helped over 100 students improve in all areas of the K-12 curriculum. All of my students have raised their math scores on standardized tests by whopping margins (50th percentile to the 70th, 75th to the 90th, 90th to the 99th, etc), whether it be for the SAT, ACT, SAT, AP Exams or SAT subject tests. For high school math -- Calculus, Geometry, Algebra -- I have helped students in a variety of ways: exhaustive review sessions for final exams, tips for fast math, mnemonic strategies for difficult formulas, and boiled down explanations for elusive concepts. My insights on effective study skills and academic stress management have also been particularly helpful for students with learning differences or neurodivergence.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have been a math tutor in Elementary Math, Pre-Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 1 and 2, and SAT Math for 8 years. I have found that different students require different studying environments to reach their respective goals -- some need a calm and slow paced tutoring style, while others need quick, simplistic and fast-paced review. Students students need total comprehension to thrive in these courses, while others simply need to know the tips, tricks, rules and formulas and can't be bothered with the details and theory. I am skilled at adapting my tutoring style depending on the scenario; I can act as coach, guide, facilitator or distiller, and in the case of neurodivergence and learning differences, I can act as a study skills architect. The "common denominator" (haha) for all students is that they all need exposure to drills and problem sets that they're struggling with, and I have more than plenty of those to share. It's all about practice, practice, and more practice.

How will your college application stand out from the rest? The answer is deceptively simple: write an essay that no one else could possibly write. The most effective writing tutors out there know that their purpose is to elicit singular, unique writing from you, and little else. This is especially relevant for college applications, because admissions offices look for essays that are irreplaceable and hard to forget. Each year, they read scores of essays from impressive applicants with impressive achievements. And yet, the essays by and large sound mostly the same. It’s hard to choose between two stellar candidates with generic essays, so admissions offices move on to the essay that reads, feels and behaves like a real person. My approach to the college essay is simple and effective. It’s a dialogue-driven process that frees students up to write about what really matters, and they often learn more about themselves along the way. My students have found that it eases a lot of stress, and more importantly, that it’s effective. 85% of my students over the past 5 years have gotten into their top choice colleges, and all of them were accepted to one of their top 3. They include schools like Cornell University, Amherst College, Vanderbilt University and Middlebury College, just to name a few. I've worked with over 100 students in all areas of the college application process, whether it be standardized testing, the college search itself, or writing a successful college application essay. Over the past 5 years most of my students have been accepted to their top choice school, which sometimes ended up being a different, more selective institution than the one they came to me with. Nothing brings me more excitement than to see students succeed in this particular rite of passage.

Accommodating Tutor With Great Approach

My son was struggling with trying to organize and write his paper for his Brit. Lit. English class. We feel so fortunate to have found Henrik through the Wyzant app. Henrik was always very responsive when communicating with me through text in order to set up the online meeting times that would work for both my son and Henrik. Being that my son is in after school sports and many times was not able to meet until almost 8:00 p.m. Henrik was very accommodating to this need. My son REALLY enjoyed working with Henrik and felt as though he learned more of how to write and organize a paper in his time with Henrik than he has ever learned from anyone else. I really liked Henrik's approach. He worked closely with my son and took the time to guide him on how to fix and improve his paper as well as adding more details to create his essay. My son's words were that he really liked working with Henrik because Henrik did not do the work for him but taught him ways to organize and write the paper and feels that in the long run this will help in writing other papers. In my experience with other tutors over the years, many seem to just do the work for them, which is not great as they will not be able to do well on tests and or writing future papers. Henrik even offered to proofread his final draft just before turning it in. Many thanks to Henrik for helping my son and giving him the confidence to feel successful at the same time. Something that he really needed. We will reach out to Henrik again in the future.

Great Instructor

Henrik helped my child significantly with the SAT. Great guy who made the rigorous material enjoyable. Additionally, the tips and tricks or "test smart" type situations are what I was looking for and he delivered.

Knowledgable, empathetic and effective tutor

My son was looking for help to improve his sub-scores on the ACT. He used to struggle with reading passages and pacing himself during the science and reading tests, which was holding back his ACT composite score. With Mr. Henrik's help, he has started seeing amazing results in these sections, and he is even beginning to earn near perfect sub-scores. Mr. Henrik's approach to one-on-one ACT tutoring has been transformative. His ability to break down complex topics into understandable segments has been particularly beneficial for my son. Where my son once found himself overwhelmed by dense reading passages and intricate science problems, he now approaches these challenges with confidence and skill. Mr. Henrik's teaching methods are not only effective but also engaging, making learning an enjoyable experience. I would highly recommend Mr. Henrik for one-on-one ACT tutoring. His dedication, expertise, and patient approach have made a significant impact on my son's academic performance and confidence. If you are looking for a tutor who can help your child excel and reach their full potential on the ACT, Mr. Henrik is the perfect choice.

He helped me get into all my dream schools!

Henrik was such a great help throughout my application process. He was very knowledgeable, kind, and encouraged me to always go above and beyond. He helped me think outside of the box and really made me step out of my comfort zone in my writting ability. He gives great tips on editing and revising to make sure I was where I needed to be by the time I submitted my applications. He helped me get into all my dream schools (Cornell University, NYU, UCLA, Berkeley, and UT Austin) he was a great help and I recommend him greatly!

Knowledgeable and Effective Tutor

Henrik was a fantastic tutor that I would highly recommend him. His approach was to not only teach my son test taking skills and substantive content, but he was deliberate in his efforts to make the experience calm and process driven to alleviate the pressure cooker feeling associated with high stakes standardized tests. We are still waiting on test results, but feel confident that it will be a meaningful improvement overall.
