I have a BA in English from the University of Vermont and over a decade of experience teaching, tutoring, and generally finding creative ways to help people learn. My background’s a bit eclectic—in addition to English and history, I’ve taught Spanish, creative writing, and even trail-building and ecology in outdoor ed settings. These days, I work mostly one-on-one with students on writing, analysis, and big-picture thinking. I’m currently applying to MFA programs in fiction, and my focus is on voice, structure, and helping students make meaning, not just pass tests.

I’ve worked with students as young as 11 and as old as 40, in classrooms, libraries, online, and—more than once—across picnic tables. I specialize in helping learners who feel like school hasn’t quite spoken their language. That might mean supporting a student with dyslexia as they tackle a personal narrative, or helping a high schooler frame a nuanced argument about Orwell, or working with a bilingual student to bring clarity and flow to their essay in English. I try to keep things flexible and honest. I care less about sounding “academic” and more about students finding confidence in their ideas and learning how to express them clearly, persuasively, and with a little style.

At the end of the day, I believe strong writing is about trust—trusting your own thoughts, trusting language to carry them, and sometimes trusting a tutor to sit beside you while you figure it all out. That’s the kind of work I love doing.

Creative Writing

I’m a published writer of both poetry and short fiction, and for the past five years, I’ve had the joy of helping students bring their creative work to life. I’ve worked with writers at many stages—from middle schoolers finding their voice to adults refining their style—both in the classroom and one-on-one. My teaching is all about collaboration and care: I listen closely, ask questions, and help students shape their ideas without losing what makes their work feel original and alive. I’m especially drawn to storytelling that’s surprising, bold, or a little weird—in the best way—and I love the process of taking a rough draft and turning it into something that really sticks.
