Bio

I am a biology education nerd with a passion for helping students build science understanding, beyond memorization. I hold a bachelor’s degree in biology from Abilene Christian University and a Ph.D. in Biological Education from the University of Northern Colorado. My doctoral research focused on how science is taught and learned, especially in anatomy and physiology (A&P) courses, and that expertise continues to shape my approach to tutoring and instruction across biology and research...

I am a biology education nerd with a passion for helping students build science understanding, beyond memorization. I hold a bachelor’s degree in biology from Abilene Christian University and a Ph.D. in Biological Education from the University of Northern Colorado. My doctoral research focused on how science is taught and learned, especially in anatomy and physiology (A&P) courses, and that expertise continues to shape my approach to tutoring and instruction across biology and research topics.

I have 7 years of teaching experience at universities and community colleges, and have taught over 1,000 students in college-level courses including Anatomy and Physiology I and II (for nursing and allied health students), Mammalian Physiology (for biology majors), and Introductory Biology. I also have experience tutoring neuroanatomy, research methods/statistics, and academic writing.

I hold a Ph.D. in Biological Education and have developed advanced expertise in both quantitative and qualitative data analysis through my doctoral and postdoctoral research. I have mentored high school, undergraduate, and graduate students in data analysis as part of summer research programs, my graduate research assistantship, and my postdoctoral research appointment, guiding them through real-world applications using R, SPSS, NVivo, and Dedoose. My experience includes systematic review, regression, structural equation modeling (SEM), thematic analysis, phenomenology, ethnography, and mixed methods design. My work conducting these analyses is showcased in the publication of 15 peer-reviewed papers across education and life sciences, and through teaching and mentorship, I have helped students conduct analyses in preparation for national conference presentations.

Organized and efficient

Emmy worked with my daughter who is a freshman in high school, in an Honors Biology class. The lessons are very thorough and Emmy does a great job of making the most of the time she has. My daughter has had several lessons to help her prepare for tests and the final. My daughter really enjoys working with Emmy and always finds the lessons helpful.
