I am a biology education nerd with a passion for helping students build science understanding, beyond memorization. I hold a bachelor’s degree in biology from Abilene Christian University and a Ph.D. in Biological Education from the University of Northern Colorado. My research focused on how science is taught and learned, and that expertise shapes my approach to tutoring across biology and research topics.

I have 10 years of tutoring/teaching experience and have taught over 1,000 students in college-level biology, anatomy and physiology, and science communication courses. I also have experience mentoring students in research methods and data analysis, academic writing, and scientific presentations, helping students achieve publication goals and present work at national conferences.

I offer customized tutoring for the following topics and grade levels:
-High School Students: General & Honors Biology, AP Biology, and Human Anatomy & Physiology (including dual-enrollment)
-Undergraduate Students: Introductory Biology, Human Anatomy & Physiology I and II, Mammalian Physiology, Immunology, and APA 7 Proofreading
-Graduate Students and Adult Learners: Human Anatomy & Physiology, Research Methods & Data Analysis (including systematic review, qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods), Academic & Scientific Writing, and APA 7 Proofreading
-Standardized Exams: I offer tailored exam preparation for the AP Biology, IB Biology, and HESI 2A exams, including practice question sets.

During sessions, I help students identify what they already understand and build from there. I use visual aids and evidence-based study strategies to strengthen comprehension and retention. We'll work together through Q&A, applied examples, and frequent checks for understanding.

Wondering if this kind of support is right for you? I offer a free 30-minute consultation to discuss your goals, challenges, and how I can support your learning journey. Together, we’ll create a clear plan for building your understanding and confidence.

Approved Subjects

Anatomy

Anatomy

I have extensive experience teaching Human Anatomy (and Physiology) to pre-med, nursing, and allied health students. Having taught over 1,000 A&P students, I understand where learners typically struggle and how to build lasting understanding through clear, engaging explanations. I help students master the language of anatomy by connecting terminology to structure and function, using diagrams and other visual tools to support memory and comprehension. My approach emphasizes building understanding across multiple modalities, including personalized practice tests upon request.
Biology

Biology

I have extensive experience teaching Introductory Biology to both science majors and non-majors at the college level, and high school students in advanced biology courses (including AP and IB). I help students build a strong foundation in the building blocks of life, from cells and macromolecules to genetics and ecosystems, so they are prepared for future coursework in the biological sciences. My teaching approach focuses on making complex ideas accessible through clear explanations, visual aids, and real-world examples. I also offer personalized study tools, including custom practice quizzes, to reinforce understanding and boost confidence.
Data Analysis

Data Analysis

I hold a Ph.D. in Biological Education and have developed advanced expertise in both quantitative and qualitative data analysis through my doctoral and postdoctoral research. I have mentored high school, undergraduate, and graduate students in data analysis as part of summer research programs, my graduate research assistantship, and my postdoctoral research appointment, guiding them through real-world applications using R, SPSS, NVivo, and Dedoose. My experience includes systematic review, regression, structural equation modeling (SEM), thematic analysis, phenomenology, ethnography, and mixed methods design. My work conducting these analyses is showcased in the publication of 15 peer-reviewed papers across education and life sciences, and through teaching and mentorship, I have helped students conduct analyses in preparation for national conference presentations.
Genetics

Genetics

I have over seven years of experience teaching life sciences at the college level, with a strong foundation in genetics. In addition to collegiate instruction, I’ve designed and led molecular genetics workshops for high school students, making complex topics accessible and engaging. I’m passionate about helping students understand how genetics is the language of life, underpinning everything from evolution to biotechnology. My approach emphasizes creating clarity around genetic mechanisms and connecting those mechanisms to tangible, real-world examples.
Physiology

Physiology

I have extensive experience teaching Mammalian and Human Physiology to pre-med, nursing, and allied health students. Having taught over 1,000 A&P students, I understand where learners typically struggle and how to build lasting understanding through clear, engaging explanations. I help students develop systems-level thinking about structure and function, using diagrams and concept maps to help students illustrate homeostasis and make connections between organ systems. My approach emphasizes building understanding across multiple modalities, including personalized practice tests upon request.
Proofreading

Proofreading

As a college instructor and published researcher, I bring a keen eye for what faculty look for in academic writing: clarity, coherence, and proper formatting. I specialize in APA 7 and can quickly spot and correct issues with citations, reference lists, and paper structure. Whether you are polishing a research paper, lab report, or other assignments, I can ensure your writing is clean, professional, and aligned with academic expectations.
Writing

Writing

As a college instructor and published researcher, I specialize in helping students strengthen their academic and scientific writing by building clear, persuasive arguments supported by evidence. I offer detailed feedback on organization, clarity, and logic, while also ensuring your work meets academic standards, including APA 7 formatting, where needed. My approach goes beyond surface-level edits to help you refine your voice and communicate your ideas with confidence, whether in a lab report, assignment, or research manuscript. Whatever stage you are at, from brainstorming to drafting to polishing, I am here to help you turn your ideas into compelling writing that meets academic expectations.

Data analysis

Emmy was a wonderful support for my son while he completed the data analysis portion of his project. She was professional, responsive, and very patient, making sure he fully understood the data interpretation process. Her clear explanations and organized approach made a big difference in his confidence and the quality of his work. I truly appreciate her dedication and would highly recommend her.

Organized and efficient

Emmy worked with my daughter who is a freshman in high school, in an Honors Biology class. The lessons are very thorough and Emmy does a great job of making the most of the time she has. My daughter has had several lessons to help her prepare for tests and the final. My daughter really enjoys working with Emmy and always finds the lessons helpful. We plan to continue to work with Emmy as needed.

Knowledgeable and supportive tutor

Emmy helped me with figuring out my next steps for the study I'm doing and with understanding where I was getting stuck. I also have been working on a major sleep deficit and Emmy was very supportive in reassuring me that I was on the right track and with encouraging me to get some rest (which I very much needed). If you're freaking out about a project, Emmy is your girl both with helping you figure a way forward and in supporting you until you get where you're going. Thanks Emmy!

Knowledgeable and a great teacher.

Physiology, anatomy and clinical immunology are the subjects she works with me on. I am a third year pharmacy student and she has made the material much clearer for me. The sessions are well worth it.

Emmy is the absolute best tutor I could’ve asked for!

She helped me prepare for the HESI exam and I ended up passing with a 95% overall. Emmy is incredibly kind, patient, and truly gifted at breaking down complex topics in a way that actually sticks. She never made me feel rushed or judged and always showed up with encouragement and clear guidance. I’m so grateful for her support, there’s no way I could’ve done this without her. If you’re on the fence, trust me: book with Emmy. She’s the real deal!
