Metropolitan State University of Denver (Biology)
I have a Biology degree and minor in Secondary Science for Teacher Licensure from MSU of Denver. My thirst for research ensures the most current and relevant information. I have many years of teaching/coaching experience out of the classroom and hundreds of hours of classroom experience. During that time I learned were students struggle with FRQ’s/concepts on the AP exams and how to make Biology and Biochemistry real world.
I have extensive SAT/ ACT preparation tools or I can just show you how to be a better listener and test taker. I will help you to become more comfortable with difficult teachers and a better note taker. I know great teachers inspire a students inner desire to learn and excel. I use project based learning with emphasis on the individual students strengths and weaknesses. I don’t think of myself as a tutor or teacher in the hard sense of the position. I think of myself as someone who has developed a coaching style. I won’t swing the bat for you or beat you over the head with the bat. What I will do is empower you with a skill set to succeed. My experience has taught me struggle builds; confidence, self esteem and work ethic.
I believe students need to struggle through the learning process- just as students have done since the time of Socrates. Students will learn to fit incoming information into their existing understanding i.e. all knowledge builds upon itself. Students will adapt their thinking to incoming information and coaching.
The number one issue for me - students need to take ownership of their education and eventually their lives. I believe in a strong desire to succeed and expect that from my students. The best way to learn anything is with focused practice. Students are required to; hear criticism and act on it, learn from setbacks and try again and finally; take the challenge to win. I have experience at empowering learners at all levels. However, I require that you send me an email with a brief profile; area of concern, career goals, education goals, how I can help and any deadlines that you may be facing before we start. I'm not an English tutor so bullet points will work. Although, if you need help with Math or English feel free to ask. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Parents are free to sit with us if time permits. I'm a parent myself who spent more than I care to say on tutors for one of our sons. It's a big step, but I know from personal experience some students fall through the cracks with an unfair label. It took three hours a night three days a week to get him caught up. There is no way to compare his confidence and collegiate success against the student he once was. Looking back it was the greatest gift we could have given him. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I'm a recent Biology graduate.
I'm preparing to finish a minor in physics; I have three more classes. I love meteorology and ecology- lots of background. I have labs, webquests and assorted activities to make these sciences real.
