As a licensed k-6 educator in the state of Colorado, I have proven my dedication to excellence by helping children close the achievement gap in both literacy and math. I love teaching children the strategies that will make learning accessible, and have successfully helped even reluctant learners!
I am an experienced classroom educator and tutor. I taught in primary grade classrooms in St. Vrain Valley School District. In addition, I have completed 15 credits towards an M.A. in Education. I emphasize multimodal learning, and love to teach in a way that integrates subject areas with skill acquisition.
I offer literacy intervention in phonics, fluency and comprehension. Mendi Y., interventionist at Legacy Elementary, spoke highly of my students' achievements; she said, "(Hannah) was able to isolate areas of weakness in her students and implement successful strategies to help these students close their gap in performance. I saw this happen again and again in her room." I provide older students with support in mastering writing using PC Applications, correct grammar, and editing techniques.
I individualize instruction in math foundations to meet student needs. I ensure success using a kinesthetic approach, strategy development, and authentic tasks. I teach students to reason mathematically using numbers, pictures, and words. I help children build logic and function fluency through mathematical games. I instruct older students in numeric definitions, properties, and procedures, as they encounter more advanced topics.
Furthermore, I have proven my abilities with non-traditional learners and English Language Learners. I am bilingual in Spanish and English, and also enjoy instructing students in Spanish-language acquisition.
To meet social development (self-confidence/self-advocacy) goals, I encourage you to hear what your child is learning from your child herself/himself! When children become able to talk about their learning and success, they take the first step toward assuming leadership for their leaning and goal-setting. As a licensed k-6 educator in the state of Colorado, I have proven my dedication to excellence by helping children close the achievement gap in both literacy and math. We selected Hannah to work with our 2nd grader who has been struggling a bit to keep up in reading and math. He is one of the youngest in the class and really needed some creative one-on-one time. Hannah was extremely responsive to my emails and phone calls. She met with me for the first visit, showing me selected books that were exactly what interests him. Her math activities are very creative as well. She has been on time for each session, bringing activities and books completely appropriate and fascinating for our 2nd grader. He loves to draw so she has him creating his own book with his own drawings reflecting words he is learning. When a math assignment from his class did not make sense, Hannah was able to explain it to all of us and work with him to complete the assignment correctly.
Our 2nd grader is excited to know she is coming, sits at the kitchen table with her for an hour without fidgeting at all. He is proud of his work, excited to show how carefully he can write, can explain his math assignments and has bonded with Hannah very well. Hannah combines expertise working with a 7 year old with activities that show results after each session. She is patient but also keeps things moving, pushing him just enough to keep him challenged without the frustration he has been feeling.
I am a college professor and am very impressed with her style, knowledge, presentation, and the work they complete each session. We are so glad we found her and will be using her for bi-lingual learning once he is up to speed in core subjects. I would strongly recommend Hannah as an excellent tutor!
Hannah seems to have developed an excellent rapport with our grandson and is very effective at keeping him focused for the entire hour and keeping the lesson a fun learning experience. They are about to have their fourth session.
Hannah is going to make a great tutor for Jimmy. She quickly zoned in on the areas that he needs work in. I can tell by his spelling and punctuation after his first small written story with her, that this is exactly what he needs. Thanks Hannah.
Hannah has been a big help to my son. His writing grades dropped to a C on his second trimester report card. We hired Hannah and after working with her for two months once a week he is now back up to B. We plan on having her work with him all summer to help him prepare for middle school. I have no doubt he'll be doing A level work at that point.
My son enjoys his sessions with Hannah. She gets the job done and keeps him on task all while making it interesting and fun.
We are very impressed with her techniques and enthusiasm. We are very pleased.
Hannah worked with my 6 year old daughter who had been struggling with reading in Kindergarden and at the start of the first grade. My daughter showed extremely high improvement over the time that she worked with Hannah, and she is now firmly at grade level. Hannah was very professional and communicative to me as a parent. She shared with me the different tools and tricks that she was using to help my daughter progress and what she perceived as her strengths and what she thought she should pay special attention to.
Hannah has been working with our daughter (2nd grade) for several months and she has done a terrific job. We are very happy with the service she has provided and find the time she spends with our daughter is very valuable and has shown in her performance at school.
Hannah has been with us for one week and my granddaughter looks forward to her lessons.
I know there will be a great improvement soon and we plan on having Hannah for at least 2 years
Hannah is a good fit for our family.
We have already seen improvement, Hannah is so patient and very caring
Hannah has done a wonderful job with my son. He looks forward to seeing her and I've already seen improvement with his writing. The skills she is giving him will help for years to come. We are very pleased.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I recently attended the Diverse Learners Conference in Denver, which has helped me better understand ADD and ADHD as learning styles. I help children set and monitor their own goals in both academics and behavior. I provide multiple modalities (kinesthetic, visual and verbal) to support information processing. I use organizers to promote information retention. When needed, I provide refocusing tasks that simulate both hemispheres of the brain. In addition, I can provide a space that is free from distractions.
I am experienced in supporting dyslexia and unidentifiable disabilities displaying similar symptoms. I am familiar with the Take Flight curriculum, and I utilize this approach. I have provided a structured, systematic, multisensory system for gaining phonological awareness to children, aged 7 to 13. At the Diverse Learners Conference in Denver, I developed effective strategies for engaging dyslexic students in meaningful ways. I coach children in segmenting words into individual phonemes, and blending phonemes together into words. I also emphasize rhyming and common English language word patterns.
As a licensed elementary educator, I love to coach children in strategies that will provide math and reading efficacy.
I teach all components of literacy, including: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. (See Phonics and Reading descriptions)
I also teach comprehension and fluency in mathematics. I teach children strategy development and metacognitive techniques through kinesthetic, visual and linguistic modalities. I help children create and use 100-charts, number lines, and simplified pictures to build mathematical understanding and confidence!
I have done classroom research on instructional skill development and effective mathematical practice. As the result of this research, I developed a library of empowering 10-minute lessons that provide a solid foundation in number sense, spatial reasoning and grouping strategies. I teach all elementary levels - straight through algebra!
As a first and second grade teacher who has worked with diverse learning groups, I have experience instructing children in phonological awareness and the alphabetic principal. I use Elkonin Boxes (with magnetic chips and paper boxes) to instruct students in segmenting and blending words together. I have students manipulate and identify word rimes (this is a technical word for the graphemes composing a word ending), consonants, vowels and consonant blends. I also do word family and vowel sorts to identify common patterns found in words. In addition, I instruct students in the creation of authentic tools to promote a generalized understanding of English letter-sound correspondences.
I teach mathematical inquiry and reasoning, as well as definitions, rules and procedures. At this level, I emphasize solidifying an understanding of the structure and properties of numbers. I help my students identify appropriate methods for making comparisons between, and drawing conclusions about these numbers. Furthermore, I introduce data and graphs to make predictions and generalizations about patterns, variability, change, and order in number sets.
I am an experienced reading teacher, and can help students hone both comprehension and fluency skills.
To boost fluency, I use a range of tools including: level-appropriate books, various decoding strategies, word/sound manipulation, generalization strategies, word sorts, Fry's word lists, customized word lists, and modeled intonation/expression.
To enhance comprehension, I coach students to make predictions, journal, utilize organizers, and retell/summarize stories.
I use modeling, gradually release of responsibility, repetition, and creative engagement with academic materials to scaffold learning. I stimulate sensory processing through cross-lateral movement routines, breath control activities and other re-focusing techniques. I have used Wilson (Orton-Gillingham) and Lindamood Bella curricula with tier 2 and 3 intervention groups in my first and second grade classroom. I have used Take Flight for individual tutoring, and frequently utilize these strategies with all my students.
I coach students in organizational techniques, note taking, and resource utilization. In addition, I provide instruction in the fundamental concepts of the target subject. To prepare for tests, I help students identify key concepts and organize notes. I am a licensed k-8 educator in the state of Colorado.
