I decided to start tutoring after helping my son with his Principles of Financial Accounting course. I enjoyed explaining concepts to him in ways that are different than explanations typically found in textbooks. For example, borrowing money from the bank is like renting an apartment. When you rent an apartment for a year you pay rent in exchange for using the apartment. When the rental period is done, you return the apartment to the landlord. When you rent an apartment for a year you pay rent in exchange for using the apartment. When the rental period is done, you return the apartment to the landlord. With a bank loan, you pay interest (rent) in exchange for using the money. When the loan period is done, you return the money to the bank. I so enjoyed every time my son had another “aha” moment that I decided to help others understand accounting too.

I am a recently retired Accounting professor. I taught Principles of Financial and Managerial Accounting throughout my 25 years of university teaching. I also regularly taught Cost/Managerial Accounting, Accounting Systems at the undergraduate and graduate level, Individual Taxation, Business Taxation, Information Systems (MIS), and Business Computing (Microsoft Office Suite).

I often taught accounting courses where most of the students were not accounting majors. The biggest impediment to my students’ success was that they did not understand how accounting applied to their majors or to their lives. I was able to use my broad educational and teaching background to make that connection and relate the course material to all of my students, both business and non-business majors.

INTRODUCTORY AND MBA FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING
In financial accounting, instead of just focusing on debits and credits, I ask students to reason their way through the following questions. What are the underlying events that make up a transaction? Why is it necessary for a business to record the information? What accounts are affected? How does the information affect the financial reports? How can companies use the information to make better decisions? If you can answer these questions, the related journal entries will make intuitive sense.

Managerial Accounting

Managerial Accounting

I taught managerial and cost accounting for the past 11 years of my 25-year career as a university professor. In my managerial and cost accounting courses, we begin by establishing why a company would benefit from gathering information of interest in the first place. Then, instead of applying formulas that students have to memorize, we reason our way through the problem. We establish the information that we know and identify what we need to solve for. We then use logic and simple algebra to solve for the unknowns. That way, we derive the formulas instead of memorizing them. This method helps students to solve related problems even if they look different than the problems in class.
Microsoft Access

Microsoft Access

I co-authored two editions of a Microsoft Access textbook. I taught MS Access extensively in my undergraduate and graduate Accounting Systems courses, including an eight-week database design and implementation project that I created. I taught MS Access in my Information Systems (MIS) course where students completed six basic MS Access assignments. Additionally, I conducted many conference workshops in MS Access for Accounting Information Systems faculty.
Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel

I incorporated Excel into all of the courses I taught throughout my 25 years as a university accounting and computer information systems professor, even in courses that did not have a specific Excel component. The best way to learn Excel is to use it to solve problems relevant to you. For example, in my accounting courses I show students how to set up their homework problems in Excel and often create templates that they can use for these problems. These templates incorporate best design practices, such as separating data from formulas. Students can easily reuse the same worksheet to solve several problems by creating formulas that refer to the data cells instead of just typing numbers.

Knowledgeable, responsive, and encouraging

I am so happy to have found Rick to help me during my graduate course. I approached him for some remedial tutoring in statistics, Excel, and accounting when faced with a class project requiring these skills (which were mostly not covered during the course). Rick got me up to speed quickly on these fundamentals, as my goal was to truly understand the concepts and not just go through the motions towards completing the project. He was extremely responsive, patient, and knowledgeable. Rick was thoroughly prepared prior to our lessons as well to ensure our time spent together was on-point. I will definitely approach Rick again for assistance as I wrap up my MBA program. In fact, I could see consulting with him on actual business projects, too, when faced with accounting and finance scenarios for which solid modeling and understanding are needed.

He was very reachable and communicative with messaging, always responding quickly, and fit in lessons as soon as he could in his busy schedule. I am an non-native English speaker and understood Rick well and felt very comfortable with him. I am thankful to Rick for tutoring me!
