I am Hongyan, though my students often address me as Dr. Hong.
I earned a Bachelor’s degree in World History in mainland China and a Master’s degree in History in Singapore. I later completed a dual-title PhD in History and Asian Studies in the United States.
I have over a decade of experience as a university professor in the United States, where I have taught modern East Asian history to a diverse student body, including traditional undergraduate and graduate students, as well as lifelong learners. I specialize in designing courses tailored to specific audiences, tracking student progress, and adapting the curriculum and pace to maximize academic success. Both traditional students and retired individuals taking college courses consistently commend my subject expertise, effective teaching methods, and commitment to student support.
I have extensive experience tutoring students of various ages. I primarily focused on tutoring middle and high school students in math and English when I was in China. While pursuing my graduate studies in Singapore, I participated in a language exchange program, tutoring Mandarin Chinese to a French student in exchange for French lessons. For the past four years, I have dedicated my free time to teaching Mandarin Chinese to elementary schoolchildren in the United States.
I've studied several languages, including French, German, and Japanese, which gives me a solid understanding of the challenges language learners often face. I'm here to share my experiences with you.
As a teacher, I am deeply committed to fostering a positive learning environment where students' individual needs are prioritized, allowing them to actively guide their learning journey. My role is to provide expert knowledge and constructive guidance to support their academic development.
