Hello, I'm Lisa.
I began teaching in middle and high school classrooms in Arizona. I taught various social studies subjects, including state, American, and world history, as well as middle school English. I worked with students who were largely English language learners, ages 14 to 18.
After moving to Colorado, I was a substitute teacher at elementary, middle, and high school levels in various content classrooms.
Fifteen years ago, I entered the home school community. I navigated providing and acquiring core and elective instruction for our children. Two have successfully completed their bachelor's degrees, one in the sciences and one in the arts, and are working now; the third is in her sophomore year at university.
During these years I also worked with cooperatives and offered classes locally for other home school families in science and history.
I am comfortable tutoring math to algebra I, English language and composition, literature, history, and sciences to early high school level. My preference is working with middle school students, that time when young people are just beginning to see the possibilities in the things they are learning and when they can get stuck in a struggle if they don't get a little boost.
For families who home school and would like some scaffolding over one or several subject areas, I'm happy to sit down and go over the student's individual goals and work up a program of supplemental tutoring support.
For students in public and private schools, I can work with the needs of the courses the student is currently taking.
In-person tutoring can be supported with some online interaction, if the family prefers. I'm happy to work with specific learning needs, or programs such as Orton-Gillingham.
It's important for a tutor and family to be a good fit, so our first session is held at no charge. Rates are set at a lower cost to make more than one weekly session possible if needed (during times of struggle or preparation for testing).
