My love for animals and biology arose from always being outdoors hike, biking, and exploring. Later on in life after several snorkeling trips to the ocean I shifted my growing interest in biology below the surface to marine biology. I decided to go to college for a degree in marine biology at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. While there I worked all four years in a marine mammal research lab. Over the years in this lab I helped graduate and PhD students on various research projects from aerial surveys to better understand populations of marine mammals, to sampling spinal cord tissue to understand its structure.
My own research project, that was used for my honors degree, was investigating the phenology (the relationship between climate and periodic biological phenomena (such as bird migration or plant flowering)) of bottlenose dolphin standings in our area in order to see if there was a change over time, and what was causing that change. I am still working on this project with several professors at UNCW and am getting close to publishing this research!! I love sharing what I have learned with people and helping people better understand biology!
