As a professional private tutor, mentor and coach with over 20 years experience (newer to Wyzant), I am devoted to your learning and understanding of any topic that we engage in. Having been a former college professor and a current scientist, engineer and IT systems analyst/architect, with degrees in engineering & computing (BSEE), and science (PhD), I bring real-world knowledge and skills into our work together.

And as a tutor of long practice, I bring a breadth and depth of expertise to contemporary curricula, methods and standards.

I am extraordinarily patient, gentle, easy to understand and work with. Tutoring is different in important ways from classroom teaching, and requires a unique relationship with the student and their individual style of learning. With a doctorate in Neuropsychology, I am particularly proficient at working with neurodivergent clients, including ADHD/ADD, learning anxiety, and other attentional/cognitive challenges. I am also adept at teaching study and organization skills, providing academic counseling, and increasing self-confidence.

I routinely tutor High School & College mathematics, science and computer engineering. Mathematics subjects include Algebra I thru Calculus, as well as advanced probability and statistics. In science, I tutor HS subjects such as Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, including Honors and AP in those subjects. University subjects include general Biology, Chemistry, and Physics through modern physics, as well as Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Neuroscience.

I would be delighted to assist you. I tutor one on one, in a Socratic approach that focuses on your unique learning style. If you are not understanding the material, it is entirely my responsibility, assuming you are diligent and committed to learning. Please feel free to contact me for further details and to establish rapport, ensure a good fit, and perhaps schedule a session.

Computer Engineering

Computer Engineering

With a BSEE (emphasis in computer science) from CU Boulder, and graduate coursework in advanced computational systems, I have a strong background in computer engineering. In particular, I’ve designed and implemented a 16-bit RISC machine for use in micro-scale systems, and as Chief Scientist for a technology startup, I invented and patented the Virtual Supercomputer, a machine architecture designed to solve computationally-intensive problems in business, finance, and national defense. Regarding instruction in Computer Engineering, as an adjunct assoc professor at National University, I developed a simulator for teaching computer architecture design and machine programming, and taught courses in computer hardware design. As Chair of CS/IS at Grossmont College (San Diego), I taught courses in computer hardware & architecture, computer architecture, and machine programming. And finally, I have tutored Computer Engineering for more than 20 years.
Computer Programming

Computer Programming

I have been programming computers for over 40 years, including advanced software development. Languages include C, Java, scripting (various), Visual BASIC, Matlab, Pascal, LISP, FORTRAN, COBOL, BASIC, Assembly & Machine languages for micro- and supercomputer architectures. Regarding instruction in Computer Programming, as adjunct and full-time faculty at UCSD Extension, National University, and Grossmont College (San Diego), I have taught courses in C, Visual BASIC, assembly & machine programming, program design, structured programming, and software engineering. And finally, I have tutored Computer Programming for more than 20 years.

Further, I developed new computer science courses and curricula. Further, I have been programming computers for over 40 years, including advanced software development. Martial Arts

Martial Arts

I have been a student & instructor of T'ai Chi Ch'uan, a soft, internal-energy martial art, since 1995. Ta'i Chi stands on its own, but is also the foundation of Kung Fu. As Shifu at Joy of Three Happiness School of T’ai Chi Ch’uan, I teach Yang Style Short Form, Ch'i Kung, T'ai Chi for Health, Martial applications, Push Hands sparring, and Taoist Philosophy.

Good Tutor

Helping me understand Computer Science concepts. Very knowledgeable and what gets taught really sticks in my head. Dr. G has a lot of patience and wants to be sure that you as a student are understanding the concepts and truly are enjoying what you're learning from him.

Very knowledgeable

He teaches with patience and makes the lessons fun. My son, with an ADHD, both enjoys the lessons and builds up self confidence. ARM was my son’s nightmare and he almost lost his hopes to study university. Dr. Gary is very knowledgeable in other subjects as well on computer sciences. Especially good at how to handle and teach a student with ADHD. Thanks to Dr. Gary.

Great Tutor - Patient and Fun!

My daughter enjoyed her first two hour session with Dr. G to review Physics I prior to her final. She felt confident how and what he was teaching her, and feels she is grasping the concepts better. She loves to get a fist pump from him on zoom when she does a good job!

Natalie, 2 lessons with Dr
