About Carol

My philosophy of education, developed over fifteen years of teaching and tutoring, is to find ways to ignite sparks within students that will propel them to become lifelong learners. I approach tutoring as a collaboration between instructor and learner. My part is to respect students as individuals, encourage them while holding them to a high standard, and help them gain confidence and skills to reach their own goals.

Like athletes and musicians, writers improve with practice, so I will assign homework, taking into consideration other writing assignments you may have pending. I enjoy working with all age groups and skill levels and will adapt my approach accordingly.

Writing is a key skill for success in academics and professionally. If you want to improve your writing, if you need help or even a refresher in English grammar, if you want some linguistic tools with which to decode new vocabulary, if you want literature to come alive, I can help.

I graduated from college summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts/English. For eleven years I taught weekly classes in literature, creative writing, essay writing (including SAT prep), research papers, grammar, and beginning Latin and French to small groups of homeschooled students, fourth grade through seniors. I was a substitute teacher for four years, including ten weeks with a high school English class. I have tutored middle school through high school students in writing and literature and helped them improve their grades. For ten years I taught my own children. I have written and edited professionally for businesses, nonprofits, authors, and myself. I love to read and have conversations with others about what we read, which is a key part of my approach to tutoring literature.

My rate is $48 per hour. We can work together at a library or your school, office, or home depending on distance, or online. I am generally available between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. My cancellation policy requires 24-hour notice. I look forward to hearing from you,

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Homeschool

I homeschooled my three children for a total of ten years. All three children are lifelong learners. Two have bachelors degrees and one has a graduate degree. For eleven years I also taught weekly group classes in writing, literature, and grammar to homeschoolers grades 4-12.
