My philosophy of education, developed over fifteen years of teaching and tutoring, is to find ways to ignite sparks within students that will propel them to become lifelong learners. I approach tutoring as a collaboration between instructor and learner. My part is to respect students as individuals, encourage them while holding them to a high standard, and help them gain confidence and skills to reach their own goals.

Like athletes and musicians, writers improve with practice, so I will assign homework, taking into consideration other writing assignments you may have pending. I enjoy working with all age groups and skill levels and will adapt my approach accordingly.

Writing is a key skill for success in academics and professionally. If you want to improve your writing, if you need help or even a refresher in English grammar, if you want some linguistic tools with which to decode new vocabulary, if you want literature to come alive, I can help.

I graduated from college summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts/English. For eleven years I taught weekly classes in literature, creative writing, essay writing (including SAT prep), research papers, grammar, and beginning Latin and French to small groups of homeschooled students, fourth grade through seniors. I was a substitute teacher for four years, including ten weeks with a high school English class. I have tutored middle school through high school students in writing and literature and helped them improve their grades. For ten years I taught my own children. I have written and edited professionally for businesses, nonprofits, authors, and myself. I love to read and have conversations with others about what we read, which is a key part of my approach to tutoring literature.

My rate is $48 per hour. We can work together at a library or your school, office, or home depending on distance, or online. I am generally available between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. My cancellation policy requires 24-hour n
