Hey there! My name's Dan, and I specialise in supporting students who are learning math and physics outside of traditional schooling, providing the structure they need to stay on track and providing rocket fuel for their ever-growing curiosity, intuition, and mathematical fluency. I'm especially experienced at supporting students who are self-studying a textbook or course, such as the student I taught AP Calculus and AP Physics to over a single summer, or the student I guided through the AoPS Precalculus textbook to make up for a lacklustre precalculus teacher in school.

My teaching superpowers include x-ray vision (intuiting the one mistake that led to an incorrect answer), telepathy (hearing the "question behind the question" when a student is confused), superhuman flexibility (explaining one concept from three or four different perspectives until we find the one that clicks for them), and a sense of humour (which keeps us both smiling even as we're deriving our twentieth trig identity).

I've been teaching and tutoring since 2015, and I've been developing curriculum since 2019, starting at HeyMath in India and continuing into my current role at Art of Problem Solving (AoPS). I've taught a wide range of courses for AoPS Online and have left my fingerprints on most of them, creating new explanations and diagrams for future instructors to use. I even spent the summer of 2023 working full-time at AoPS HQ, where I overhauled the entire Intro to Geometry course for AoPS Online.

I completed two degrees in four years at Northwestern University on a QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship, earning a BS in Applied Math and a BA in Physics (both summa cum laude). I then earned a Master's degree from Durham University (MSc in Mathematical Sciences) and a second Master's from the University of Cambridge (MASt in Pure Mathematics), both funded by a Marshall Scholarship. I scored a 35 on the ACT, 1600 on the SAT, 990 on the Physics GRE, and 5's on ten AP subjects.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

I scored 5's on the AP exams for Calc AB and Calc BC, used calculus consistently in my undergrad and grad school years, and have been tutoring students in calculus since 2019. I taught AoPS Online's Calculus course in 2023 and 2024 and updated the curriculum in the process, adding new explanations and visuals for future instructors to use. I taught one student the entire Calc AB curriculum in summer of 2025, and calculus is now his favourite subject, to the point that I'll be spending summer 2026 teaching him multivariable calculus.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I completed a BS in Applied Math (summa cum laude) at Northwestern University, which included multiple courses on techniques for solving differential equations (from first-order linear diff EQ's to Laplace transforms and Bessel equations). I have taught the AoPS Online Calculus course and tutored a number of students in calculus, including one to whom I taught the entire AP Calculus curriculum in a single summer.
Physics

Physics

I received a 5 on the AP Physics exam, graduated from Northwestern University with a BA in physics (summa cum laude), and earned an MASt studying theoretical physics at the University of Cambridge. In my role as an instructor at Art of Problem Solving (AoPS), I've taught Introduction to Physics, the F=ma Problem Series, and PhysicsWOOT (calculus-based competition physics). I've tutored individual students in everything from introductory mechanics to quantum computing, and most recently, I taught one of my students the entire AP Physics mechanics curriculum over the course of a single summer.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalculus is one of the subjects I've tutored the most in my 10+ years of experience, most recently with a student who's working through the AoPS Precalculus textbook to fill in the gaps of what he's learning in school. I also taught AoPS Online's Precalculus course in 2024 and updated the curriculum in the process, adding new explanations and visuals for future instructors to use.
Probability

Probability

I've taught Intro to Counting & Probability and Intermediate Counting & Probability for AoPS Online and updated the curriculum for both, adding new explanations and visuals for future instructors to use. In my experience, probability is one of the most intuition-based subjects in math — easy if you have the right intuition, frustratingly difficult if you don't — and through my use of diagrams, analogies, and examples, I impart my intuition for counting and probability to my students.
Python

Python

I first learned Python in college for a data analysis internship at Fermilab, and I've taught both Introductory and Intermediate Python in my role as an AoPS instructor. I've tutored a handful of students in Python and C++, and I periodically use Python to make widgets for my personal use.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry (usually taught as part of precalculus) is one of the subjects I've tutored the most in my 10+ years of experience, most recently with a student who's working through the AoPS Precalculus textbook to fill in the gaps of what he's learning in school. I also taught AoPS Online's Precalculus course in 2024 and updated the curriculum in the process, adding new explanations and visuals for future instructors to use.

Flexible, Patient and Knowledgeable

Dan helped my high school son to solve quite some F=ma contest problems, which were pretty hard and required a very solid physics background. He is a very patient tutor and he's very flexible and willing to accommodate the session length as needed. He tries to help the student to reach the solution through thinking and discussion instead of presenting them the answer. My son enjoys sessions with Dan. He has become more interested in solving problems and feels more confident.

Efficient and effective tutor

Dan has worked with my son - primarily to prepare him for exams for his High School Physics class. Dan reviews the material in advance and works step by to step to ensure that my son understands the material - both in concept and in practice. A+ tutor - recommended without reservation.
