Math is a very logical subject, but the downside to this is that it is frequently taught in an overly logical way, as if students were computers that just needed programming! After a decade of studying math---from undergraduate years at CWRU and Columbia to my time as a PhD student and NSF Graduate Research Fellow at UC Berkeley---I've learned how to study and teach math to achieve a conceptual understanding, emphasizing the underlying ideas over stiff memorization. Rather than delivering yet another lecture, I try to understand your thought process and find where there are key ideas missing, as well as strategies to make the whole process more efficient. With the right way of thinking, you'll never face a problem that you don't know how to approach!

I started tutoring as an undergraduate at Columbia, where I was a visiting student taking advantage of the advanced math courses not available at my home institution of Case Western Reserve University. As a PhD student at UC Berkeley I did research in number theory, taught a number of courses in calculus, linear algebra, and discrete math, and mentored undergraduate math majors through Berkeley's Directed Reading Program. And I continued tutoring throughout, getting over 300 hours of experience with over 30 students.

My experience is largely with high school and undergraduate students working on calculus and linear algebra, but I've tutored everything from high school algebra to undergraduate abstract algebra, complex analysis, and even algebraic topology. And if you need help with a course I haven't mentioned, just ask and I'll let you know what I can do!

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

Besides the many calculus classes I took in my 10 years of studying math, I've TA'd a number of calculus class at UC Berkeley during my graduate studies, and I have hundreds of hours of experience tutoring calculus at all levels: calc I, II, III, AB, BC, as well as undergraduate calculus classes. Whatever you're facing, I'll be happy to help!
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

As a PhD in math, specializing in number theory, discrete math is one of the fundamental subjects in my field. It'd be hard to do number theory without being an expert in discrete! Beyond that, I was the instructor of a discrete math course at UC Berkeley, for which I wrote a semester worth of lectures, practice problems, and exams. I still have my lecture notes from that course in case they ever come in handy!
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I've been working with linear algebra for 10 years, including as a core fundamental of my PhD research in number theory, as a TA for linear alegbra courses at Berkeley, and of course through many hours of tutoring. On top of all that, it's my favorite subject to teach, so I'd be delighted to work with you on it!

He knows his Stuff!

The guy knows all his stuff, he can help with real analysis even and upper level math content. He walks through and explains clearly what the problem is asking and makes sure you get it. And he doesn't make you feel bad about any wrong answers. He helps you out and is very encouraging. 5/5.

Knowledgeable and patient

He explains throughly with various methods and does so kindly. Unlike past tutors or teachers, he doesn’t make you feel stupid. I look forward to learning from him again!
