I am passionate about learning, literature, and writing. Several years after graduating from Loyola College in Maryland with a BA in English/Fine Arts/Writing, I began my teaching career at a college-prep high school in Baltimore. While teaching ELA, I received my first Master's degree from Loyola University in Maryland, an M.Ed. in Curriculum Design and Instruction. Passionate about literature and writing, I moved to Denver in 1990 where I attended the University of Denver. I earned both an M.A. and a PhD in English Literature and Language and continued teaching all along the way. While at DU, I tutored students on grammar and mechanics, writing, and critical reading skills at the writing center. The thing I love most about tutoring is watching the "lightbulb go on" or a student's face when she or he has that "Aha!" moment and finally understands the concept.

Expertise: Literary Analysis, Grammar & Mechanics, and Persuasive & Research-based Writing; Editing and Proofreading; and SAT/ACT Verbal Prep. After more than 35 years in education, on both the high school and college levels, I'm dedicated to helping learners explore new material and discover knowledge they never thought they could know. I taught English Language Arts at a college-prep high school back East for over five years at the beginning my career and again at a local college prep for nearly the last ten years. While in grad school at DU, I also taught first-year English as well verbal-prep classes for a variety of the standardized tests. I know what high school students need to know to succeed in college and what college students need to know about reading and writing to succeed in any discipline.

As your tutor, I'll work patiently with you to develop the skills you need and help you understand the logic behind them. I'm easy to reach and will always reply to you quickly. Please contact me with any questions or to schedule a complimentary consultation to discuss your needs. I look forward to helping you achieve the success you desire!

Whether you're attempting to craft a provable thesis for a research paper or needing to delve into the deeper themes of a piece of literature, I can help. English, especially English language and literature, consists of a wide variety of styles and genres. Understanding the type of writing is the first step to unpacking a piece of literature or drafting your own written masterpiece; I can help you with specific skills needed to explore the many different types of writing in the canon.
Grammar

Grammar

I can help you with all the rules of grammar and mechanics. English rules for punctuation, verb tense, syntax, etc. all have a logic to them, and I can help you understand why certain structures are the way they are. During my many years teaching grammar and mechanics, I’ve collected a lot of tips and tricks for remembering the basics and improving your writing.
Literature

Literature

My knowledge of literature includes extensive experience with both British and American literature from its origins through contemporary works. I also have a special passion for drama which ranges from the beginnings of theatre tracing back to the ancient Greeks through modern drama. I wrote my dissertation on Shakespeare and have extensive knowledge of his plays and sonnets.
Proofreading

Proofreading

In addition to teaching English literature and writing, I’ve also worked as an Instructional Designer in the corporate world where I wrote, proofread, and edited a variety of materials. I can teach you proofreading tricks to help you catch some common writing mistakes that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Writing

Writing

Throughout my teaching career, I have taught verbal prep courses for the SAT, ACT, GRE, and GMAT standardized tests. All these tests have a shared focus when it comes to writing: the seven or eight mistakes that adult writers continue to make. I’m committed to helping you explore these types of writing errors, understand the reasoning behind them, know how to correct them, and improve your writing skills.

Expert Essay Guidance

Steve helped my 9th grade son rewrite an essay. Within one hour, he had helped my son identify improvements to the essay to address the teacher's critiques and helped him think through specifics for how to implement these improvements. By the end of the session with Steve, my son had a detailed plan for reworking the essay which he used for 3 hours that night. My son was energetic and excited to tackle the changes, thanks to the discussion with Steve. My son resubmitted the essay the next day and the teacher remarked that the changes were significant and impressive. Thank you Steve for showing my son how engaging English can be and how satisfying it is to have a well-written product you can be proud of. Steve did a tremendous job at coaching my son.
