Hi, I'm Kristofer! I graduated on Dean's List with a degree in Philosophy from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 2011. I obtained an MA from the New School for Social Research in Sociology in 2013, with an emphasis on historiography, social theory, and historical/ comparative sociology. For the last two years I have led adult study groups for social theory, and this has rekindled the joy of teaching in me. I approach teaching as a process of perpetually using the "small picture" and "big picture" to reinforce each other. I believe students are more likely to succeed if the can contextualize a subject into their existing base of knowledge and interests. Students will only become enthusiastic about a subject if they can see how it matters to something else they are already interested in; conversely, the details of a particular subject are the basis for more general insights.
With my grounding in history, historical sociology, and social theory, I am able to tutor both on specific historical eras (early modern Europe, 19th-20th century United States) and on historical writing itself. I find that the difficulty of writing history for most students is less in reciting historical trivia, and more in understanding how historians craft historical arguments. If you think you have a good grasp of history but are perplexed when it comes to sitting down and writing a history paper, I am here to help!
