About Jim

Learning is a daily, lifelong process. If embraced, it can foster a fulfilling life, one with many choices regarding career, family, and personal attainment. I discovered that at an early age and feel that I have been a beneficiary. That’s my approach as a tutor: listen carefully and understand my student; respect their learning style; and ignite (or maintain) their passion for learning while helping them achieve their goals. Leaven it all with some fun.

Throughout my career, I have had the benefit of great mentor/tutors and have always tried to do the same for others. Formally, I have taught students at the high school and college level in math and history (Rutgers University - PhD, 1988) and advised many others informally as a banking and investment professional (CFA [Chartered Financial Analyst] since 1994). In 2014 I became a math tutor, mentor and substitute teacher in the Denver Public School system and an historical adviser for a national high school competition focused on the U.S. Constitution. In 2015, I started a tutoring service and have been working with middle, high school and college students.

Preparing for standardized admissions tests (SAT, SSAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT) requires a special approach, one that balances the mastery of relevant content with specific test taking strategies. I call it Substance and Strategy and my tutoring focuses on finding that balance to give my students the TOOLS and the CONFIDENCE to improve and succeed.

I have had a passion for math for as long as I can remember and have used it extensively as an engineering student and in the financial services industry. I have tutored many friends and work associates informally for years and took it up formally in 2014 in the local school system, where I continue to do so.

During more than 25 years of business development in finance I have continually educated clients, prospects and associates, explaining complex concepts and translating industry terminology for non-specialist audiences. Mentoring and tutoring have been a way of life.

The CFA program is an extraordinary educational experience, relying extensively on self discipline and and, often, self instruction. That approach served me well when I completed the program in 3 years and that attention to a comprehensive, detailed plan is the foundation for my CFA tutoring.

My goal is to assist you attain your goals, first by getting to know what you are trying to achieve and understanding the the way you learn most effectively. Then we will create a clear plan, with measurable milestones, and an implementation schedule to meet your objectives.

Call or email at any time to get acquainted. There is no obligation until we agree that we have a good fit.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have a PhD in American History, considerable experience teaching the subject and a love for exploring the past.

CFA

Active CFA charterholder since 1994; continuous work experience in retirement plan and corporate investments and commercial banking. Have kept current with the CFA Body of Knowledge.

COOP/HSPT

On another tutoring platform, I have been working with a student on the HSPT since October 2015. In addition to this direct experience with the HSPT, I also qualify on WyZant for the SSAT. Though there are some differences between the 2 tests, there are more similarities.

GMAT

I am very familiar with the GMAT and have worked with students preparing for it.

Prealgebra

I have always loved math and enjoy helping others improve their skills.

Series 7

I have held Series 7, 6 and 63 licenses as a retirement plan and institutional asset management professional. As a CFA charterholder and certified tutor, my knowledge base encompasses the subject matter included in the Series 7 exam. Fantastic GRE Tutor!

I couldn't have asked for a better tutor! I met with Jim for the math portion of the GRE and was able to bring my score up 7 points (26 percentile points) in a little under 2 months. Jim is patient, flexible, and willing to explain things in multiple ways. He's very encouraging and helped me overcome a lot of my test anxiety. The last time I took the test, I felt like I was studying with no rea
