I can help you succeed by ensuring that you understand underlying concepts, so that you can solve photographic problems for yourself—whether that's when you're out shooting, doing post-production in Photoshop or Lightroom, or even in a conventional darkroom. At the same time, I know that technical prowess alone isn't enough to get you a great image—at least half of what makes a photo "work" is great composition and communicating your message clearly.

Sometimes students contact me about “learning photography,” thinking that everything can be mastered in an hour or two. More realistic short-term goals are something like these:
—“Learn how to control depth of field (with aperture, focal length, focusing distance)”
—“Learn how aperture and shutter speed combinations (and ISO) work together to get exposure”
—“Basic suggestions for composition (“rule of thirds,” looking for patterns, contrasts, etc.)”
—“Getting started with Lightroom or Photoshop: Control “exposure,” light and darks, white balance, noise reduction and sharpening”
—“Intermediate Image Processing: Controlling Selected Parts of an Image”
—"Learn about lighting ratio (main light vs. fill, etc.) in studio lighting”

The above is not an exhaustive list, it’s just to show how a huge subject like photography can be broken down into more manageable chunks. Questions? Send me a message!

Adobe Lightroom

Adobe Lightroom

I've been a pro photographer (photojournalism, commercial, fine art) for decades, doing digital work since the early 90s (digital capture for 20+ years), and I'm a former associate editor for Outdoor Photographer and two other sister photo publications. I've used Lightroom since the beginning, and Adobe Bridge and Camera RAW as well (they all use the same underlying software engine). I can help you get a handle on Lightroom, whether it's the basics or advanced work--and I can also help you decide when Lightroom or Photoshop is the better choice. (Portfolio on request--message me here if interested.)
Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop

Hi! I started working with Photoshop in the early 90s when I was a photojournalist, and grew my skills as the program matured over the years—it's far more powerful now than it was then, but don't let that scare you! My focus with Photoshop has been photography-based, rather than graphic arts, so I'm less about "glowing effects" than about nailing overall image quality (color accuracy and exposure/contrast, selective lightening/darkening, retouching defects, avoiding over-sharpening, noise reduction, etc.). I was an associate editor at Outdoor Photographer, and I worked with digital images all the way through to production—I can help you nail your process and get great results!

Knows How Teach Photography in Sequencial Steps

So far, Zachary has taught me which lenses to use, how to control what is in my images including the background, moving the camera to change the relationship of the foreground to the background, and what are good lighting conditions to photograph images. Zachary read the manual to my specific camera and has been teaching me how to photograph with it to get desired results. I plan to continue with Zachary as a tutor because he knows how to teach in a way I can comprehend the art and process of photography. After a few tutors I have tried beyond basic courses, I am fortunate to have someone I believe will help me learn how to take good photographs.
