About Dennis

Bio

I am currently a History / Secondary Education major at UCCS with an Associates degree in General Education. I dropped out of high school at 16 because I struggled to understand the topics as they were taught and I lacked any kind of structure to keep me on course. Years later when I began college I realized that there were much better ways to relay information to students than were being practiced while I was growing up. My passion for teaching stems from this, I want nothing more than to help students succeed where I failed. The greatest achievement for me is seeing that "lightbulb switching on" moment when a student grasps a concept like they haven't before.

I hope to gain more experience tutoring and teaching while I finish my certification. I feel like teaching is as much about learning as it is about relaying information. What I mean is, the only way to be a good teacher is to constantly be evaluating how you teach and learning how to improve. My goal is to be the best teacher that I can be and to help as many students as possible, so finding what works for each student and adjusting to fit their needs is paramount. In short, what I offer is personalized lessons that aim to keep your students attention and boost their understanding.

I base my lesson style on educational research. Using an interactive method and keeping a student's interest has been proven to be much more effective than direct instruction or lecturing. Instead of droning on about dates of events, I find that students retain more information if you make the events relatable. If you can discuss the atmosphere and personalities involved in the French Revolution, making a student feel like they understand why and how it happened, then they are sure to remember when it happened.

If you or your child are struggling to learn, it may just be that the issue is in the instruction, not the quality per say, but the compatibility. Let's see if taking another look with a new perspective helps. Contact me today to get started.
