But, because I was 13, and a bit rebellious, I rejected her advice and chose German instead. For once, I chose wisely. That decision has affected the course of my life.
After I had taken 4 years of German in school, my older sister started learning German in college. She saw a flier, on campus, looking for foreign language speakers to work at the Texas Renaissance Festival; we were both hired to work in a German styled beer pub. Whether to keep ourselves or our thirsty patrons entertained, we began to sing songs and tell jokes to stay entertained. That led to a 23-year long career as a comedy-singing duo. During our off-seasons, we focused our attention on strengthening our German-speaking skills, traveling, and making friends and connections in Germany and Austria. Fans of our show, who knew about our love of travel, launched our 2nd business into leading tours to German-speaking countries. Speaking another language is like having a second passport; it gets you into all the places a normal tourist doesn't get to go, and it builds life-long friendships that would, otherwise, be unavailable to you.
My mother was an English teacher, so I was forcibly taught grammar, parts of speech, word order, etc. I chose the word "forcibly" on purpose. Not everyone loves learning the rules of speech, and I was chief among them, so I excel at making these challenging/boring topics digestible. Understanding sentence structure is vital when learning German, so I am well versed in comparing and contrasting the two. English is a Germanic based language, so there are many similarities and I can help you use the knowledge you already have and shift it to embrace the unknown.
