Bio

Hi! My name is LouAnn. I remember how stressful learning chemistry can feel when a student is exposed to new topics. Having been on both sides of the learning/teaching process, I view my job to be to show students that chemistry can be broken down into simple, easy to understand segments, and that anyone can succeed with practice.

Hi! My name is LouAnn. I remember how stressful learning chemistry can feel when a student is exposed to new topics. Having been on both sides of the learning/teaching process, I view my job to be to show students that chemistry can be broken down into simple, easy to understand segments, and that anyone can succeed with practice.

I have a BA from Murray State University where I was a presidential scholar. I completed 52 hours of chemistry coursework with a 4.0. During my time at Murray, I enjoyed tutoring general, nursing, and analytical chemistry students through the university learning center. I then did my PhD work at Vanderbilt University where I was a Harold Stirling Vanderbilt Scholar. My research concentrated on organometallic synthesis and x-ray crystallography, and my teaching experience included organic lab, nursing chemistry lab, and general and honors general chemistry labs.

After earning my PhD, I spent 5 years at the University of Virginia as an instructor and research associate. My teaching load was mainly physical chemistry lab, but I also worked in general chemistry lab. As a research associate, I worked on synthesis and photophysics of metal complexes and helped undergraduates with their research projects for publication. I have eighteen publications in major chemistry journals.

After moving to Colorado, I taught general chemistry lecture and lab, nursing chemistry lecture, and physical chemistry lab at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. After my first child was born, I tutored general chemistry and also coached Science Olympiad at my local elementary school. Later, I tutored high school chemistry, general college chemistry, organic I and biochemistry. Along the way, I have also tutored middle and high school math.

I would very much enjoy helping you with your chemistry class. I particularly like tutoring high school general, AP, college general and nursing chemistry classes. It makes me happy to see students have early success in chemistry.

Chemistry

I know sometimes chemistry can be a stressful subject in school, but I enjoy helping people see that it is very doable. It usually just takes slowing down a little from the hectic classroom pace and finding ways to think about concepts and problems so that it "sticks in your head".

Knowledgeable and patient!

Great tutor! She explains chemistry in a clear, simple way that actually makes the concepts click. I’ve gained a lot of confidence since starting sessions. Highly recommend for anyone who wants patient, effective help. She explains then we do a problem together then if i get it wrong she corrects in a positive way.
