Hi, I'm Bruce! I'm a teacher of 19 years, passionate about making learning engaging and fun while also helping my students gain mastery and confidence. My teaching has woven through middle, high school, and college first-year levels--public, private, and university settings. I earned a BA (Magna Cum Laude) from Colorado College in History/Political Science and a Masters (MA) in History from Brown University. I'm enthusiastic to tutor writing, history of all types, public speaking, and academic skill-building at nearly any grade level.

Tutoring, whether to strengthen writing or review formulas and functions, should involve elements of creativity to capture students' imagination. In my classroom and tutoring sessions, I love making personal connections with students and tapping into their skills to retain and enjoy the material. I have taught and helped hundreds of middle and high school students, along with one-on-one mentoring at the college level, and through Wyzant offer online tutoring at any of these levels. Effective tutoring is my heart!

I have three college-aged kids, so I know the adventure of teen and undergrad years. When I'm not teaching, I love hiking, running, reading good books, and teaching in Colorado.

I have taught American History at the middle and high school levels for over 15 years, and earned a Masters degree from Brown in History. At my current school I am the head of the History department, organizing curriculum, overseeing other colleagues, and (hopefully) creating a passion for the fascinating past with my amazing students. I am qualified, but more importantly am just plain fascinated with narrative and historic arc of the United States.
European History

European History

Both my undergraduate degree and Master's degree from Brown University focused on European History from many different time periods. The intrigue, clash of ideas, and restless excitement of Europe's past is what first drew me to it, and the chance to share the past with others keeps me going. Teaching European history the past 23 years, as a TA at Brown and at the middle school, high school, and early colleges levels has given me a broad historical knowledge and, I believe, an ability to help bring it to life and enjoy sharing it with my students!

I was a Political Science-History major in college (Colorado College), and have been engaged with political studies throughout my teaching career. I had the pleasure of working on capital hill in the late 1990s, and am interested in this area of study.

As an educator for over 20 years, I have come to realize the power of strong written expression in every field. Proofreading is the essential tool to make writing persuasive, engaging, and effective. With it, a written paper or presentation can sing; without it, it is weak and unconvincing. I am always eager to help students master proofreading as a tool to success!
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

Coached and taught speech and debate for four years, mentoring students in debate, interpretive, and impromptu competitive events. More important than that experience, my passion is to help hone students' skill sets not fully acquired in regular classroom settings: speaking, listening, argumentation, analysis, teamwork, critical thinking, and greater confidence in public speaking. Public speaking (and the fear of...glossophobia) is about gaining confidence, organizing and analyzing, and creating poise in front of groups of all sizes. I teach history, and my classroom (ideally) tends to buzz with discussion, Socratic seminars, and a lively interaction of ideas and perspectives; I hold students to a high standard of expressing their thoughts, and see tutoring in public speaking as an awesome challenge and opportunity!

I am currently a history, teacher at the junior high and high school level, and my academic background is in history as well. I am a season teacher of over 20 years, and both my undergraduate and graduate degrees are in history in political science.

While my current focus in teaching is history, creating an ability to write powerfully and with expression in any field is one of my passions. A well-crafted, engaging paper, proposal, or project gives us credibility and persuasiveness, and allows our ideas to escape being drab and unimpressive. With an MA from Brown University and over 20 years of teaching middle schooler, high schoolers, and first-year undergraduates, I am committed to helping students develop strong, clear writing and gain confidence as they become equipped with skills and strategies to bring their writing to life!
