About Meredith

My name is Meredith, and I would love to work with your child. I have over 15 years of experience in the education field, ranging from running my own private school, to teaching a one-room classroom, to homeschooling my children. I have developed curriculum programs and tutoring programs and have co-authored a series of reading/writing and phonics books to teach children to learn how to read in only 100 lessons. I have also co-authored a handbook called My Everything Book specifically designed to help children who struggle.

I started tutoring 9 years ago, with 6 high school boys, teaching them biology and performing 2 hour labs weekly. That transformed into working with children of all ages and all ability levels. I mostly tutor students in math (from counting to pre-calculus), reading (letters to literature) or spelling (I have lots of nifty spelling tricks!). However, I have also tutored students in ACT prep, ASVAB testing, cognitive and processing skills, and speech therapy.

Most of the students I work with have some form of learning disability or special needs. I have experience with ADD, ADHD, Asperger's, CP, Tourette's, OCD, and Functional Disconnect Syndrome.

I definitely favor a "hands-on" approach to learning, and I always try to make learning fun. If it's not fun, it won't stick. Don't get me wrong, it isn't always fun, and sometimes there's hard work involved. But with hard work comes rewards! I tailor my methods to the learning styles and needs of each individual student, and have had some students coming to me twice weekly for almost 3 years straight.

One of the things that makes me unique as a tutor is I don't focus only on academic skills, I also work on building character. I implement an accountability system with each and every student. They earn stickers at the end of each session, and when the sticker sheet is full (25 stickers) I give the sheet to the parent to decide how to reward their student. I typically suggest something like an ice cream cone, a Redbox movie, trip to the dollar store, etc...

I ask each child a set of questions at the end of each session. The typical questions include:
1) Did we start off our session on time, with a good attitude? (This sets the expectation for punctuality and a mind ready to learn)
2) Did you stay focused, and work hard without complaining? (Expectations for effort and attitude)
3) Have you been good at school and at home? Respectful to parents and teachers? Not fighting with siblings? (Accountability for behavior outside of my sessions)
4) Do you have any improvements? (This allows the child a time for reflection, and to focus on the positive)

I have also added other stickers at the request of the parents. One of my students can earn two other stickers for:
5) Do you have any missing assignments? (If no, then she gets a sticker)
6) Did you write down all of your homework assignments in your planner?

The parent and I become partners in their child's education, and I welcome parents to sit in on any session with their child. I look forward to hearing from you and finding ways to help your student succeed! Let's work together to change lives today.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

My son has ADHD, as does my husband. I have also tutored numerous children with ADD/ADHD.

Adobe InDesign

I use InDesign on a daily basis as a graphic designer. I have created newsletters, advertisements, as well as handbooks, and an entire reading and writing curriculum.

Algebra 1

I have tutored several children in Algebra 1 successfully. I personally struggled with Algebra terribly in high school, which I believe is to my advantage, because now I can understand a child's frustration, and teach them techniques to make the process easier and more understandable.

American History

American history is a favorite subject of mine. I enjoy sharing my love for history with my students. One of my favorite questions to ask is, "What do you think it was like living like that?" I think that my approach to history helps a student appreciate living in a more modern time, as well as truly appreciate those who have gone before us.

Human Anatomy is one of my favorite aspects of science. I have taken pre-med level anatomy, and medical terminology, both of which helped greatly when I took Emergency Medical Technician. Because of my experiences, I like to add information about each organ or system being studied that my students find fascinating.

I tutored a 19-year old student with severe developmental delays for 6 months and prepped him to pass the ASVAB. He passed all of his practice tests with me with scores above 90%.

Bible Studies

I have gone to church regularly all my life, and lead devotions with my children 3 times a week. I have taken classes at Community Bible Study (CBS), as well as through my church for many years.

I am familiar with AWANA, Pioneer Clubs, and other Bible study programs.

My daughter and husband both have dyslexia, as does my mother. I am currently tutoring two other children with dyslexia as well.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently teaching a 5th grader, a 4th grader and a 7th grader in all subject areas. I have been teaching my children, and others, since kindergarten, and have seen 1.5-2 years progress in all subjects each year. I can teach any aspect of elementary education at any time.

Elementary Math

I am a homeschool mom and have tutored children in Elementary Math for over 10 years. I can focus solely on the child's homework and help them understand it, and/or we can improve mental math skills and learn new techniques using the Right Start Mathematics Tutoring Program.

Elementary Science

I have taught elementary science (grades 1-6) for the past 5 years and have also taught and tutored high school biology, physical science, and some chemistry. I adore science! It's one of my favorite subjects, and I love sharing that with my students.

I am a stickler for proper English, and have fun ways to teach it to children so that it "sticks" for them too!

I LOVE geography! Maps, countries and cultures fascinate me. I enjoy searching out what life is like in other parts of the world and sharing that fascination with my students.

Geometry is my favorite aspect of mathematics. I enjoy using a hands-on approach to math whenever possible, and, in my opinion, geometry is one of the best ways to make math more real to a child.

Proper grammar usage shows others that a child has been educated properly. I am a stickler for proper English and grammar with all of my students. However, I also have ways to make it more fun! Grammar doesn't have to be boring.

In my adult years, I have come to appreciate good literature much more than I did as a student. I would love to share that appreciation with your child, and open their eyes to the world of wonderful authors.

Everything I do is on a Macintosh, and I have only worked on a Macintosh computer.

The Apple store is one of my favorite places to go!

I have co-authored the Learning Rivers reading/writing/phonics program. I am also a LearningRx certified PACE trainer where we train children in processing skills and phonemic awareness. I have trained children in phonics skills for over 10 years.

I have homeschooled and tutored for over 10 years, and found that pre-algebra is one of my strongest areas of math skills. As a student, I struggled terribly with algebra skills, and learned many tricks and tips that I can now share with struggling students to make their journey much simpler.

I am a stickler for proper English, grammar and spelling. I can proofread your work, and/or help teach you how to proofread your own material. I pay very close attention to detail, as well as syntax and sentence structure. I work for a private school, and one of the parts of my job is to proofread term papers for a Senior Composition class. I try very hard to give positive, constructive criticism to encourage and help the writer grow.

I have co-authored the reading/writing program Learning Rivers that teaches children to read, write and spell every sound in the English language in only 100 lessons. I also implement a reading comprehension program and see several years' growth in only a few months with my students.

Social Studies

I love to teach social studies! I especially like teaching it hands-on, and sharing a love of history with my students. One of my favorite questions to ask is, "What do you think that would have been like to live in...?" I like to encourage my students to put themselves in the shoes of those who have come before us, or imagine themselves in other situations. It really gives them an appreciation for what they have as Americans, and living in a modern society.

Special Needs

I have tutored children with special needs of all kinds for 10 years. I have experience with:

Developmental Delays
Functional Disconnect Syndrome

Spelling is important, and a lack of phonemic awareness is one of the major causes of spelling issues. I train children how to hear the sounds of the words they are writing, thereby linking their ears, mouth, eyes and hands to build brain connections and make spelling easy. Also, I use colors and pictures as well as visualization techniques to help children remember their words forever.

I find a good vocabulary a sign of an educated person. Also, I find it fascinating to improve my vocabulary, decode prefixes, suffixes and root words. I like to play games with my students to improve their vocabulary and comprehension skills.

I have co-authored the reading/writing program Learning Rivers, which teaches children how to read and write every sound and spelling in the English language in only 100 lessons. One of the unique aspects of this program is that it also teaches children to write creatively.

I love to write stories and help children develop an informative, well-written research paper. I have also helped children write essays, poems, and book reports.
