About Theodore

Bio

I have always been told my energy is unmatched in other teachers and tutors, especially when considering the difficulty and specialty of the topics I enjoy teaching. I want to make you enjoy math, not just spit out formulas and facts. I bring examples from outside material into the mathematical realm, to make things approachable.

Math is not as hard as people think. It is stigmatized against and makes you a nerd for enjoying it. I want to change that stigma.

Math is not as hard as people think. It is stigmatized against and makes you a nerd for enjoying it. I want to change that stigma.

In high school I loved science, math, debate and music; I studied Applied Mathematics in college. I am know a PhD candidate at UC Davis. As an undergraduate, I tutored for CU Boulder's Student Academic Services programs as well as taking courses with the education department to formalize my teaching techniques. As a graduate student, I was a Teaching Assistant for many courses in the Applied Math department, teaching in the classroom setting, as well as holding small scale study sessions.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I've taught at the the college level courses up through differential equations. I have taken courses in education and pedagogy. I studied Applied Mathematics in school. I am currently a graduate student. I tutored privately in high school. As an undergraduate I tutored for CU's Student Academic Services programs. As a graduate student, I was a Teaching Assistant for many courses in the Applied Math department.
Calculus

Calculus

I have taught classes of all three levels of Calculus as a TA at CU. I have tutored countless students at both the college and high school level in calculus, as well.
Computer Programming

Computer Programming

In the applied math department at CU, I focused on computer science. We would generally work on theory for a portion of a course, and then spend the remainder of the course implementing numerical algorithms, tracking convergence of techniques and plotting behaviors of numerical solutions. In addition to the extensive coding in Applied math, I also took 4 courses in computer science, including data structures, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Computer Science

Computer Science

My focus in my applied math program at CU was in computer science. Each course (excepting a few pure theory math classes) contained an aspect of coding to demonstrate the behavior of an algorithm or solution technique. In addition, I took courses with the computer science department including data structures, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. I have written code extensively during each semester of undergrad and graduate studies, as well as writing code for an internship with LASP.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I have taken courses in ordinary and partial differential equations and well as initial value and boundary value problems. In addition, I have studied numerical methods to solving ODE's and PDE's.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

As an undergraduate student at CU Boulder, I got an A in Discrete Math. In addition to this course, I also took Statistics and probability which involve a lot of discrete mathematics.
Finite Math

Finite Math

Finite math is the foundation of higher level concepts in calculus and numerical analysis. I have studied in great depth the topics of finite math such as set theory, number theory, convergence of sums and series. As well as more abstract topics such as proofs through induction, contradiction, and construction. There is a great amount of overlap between finite math and discrete math, and I have used both in my studies and my work as an instructor.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

At CU Boulder I took APPM 2360 - Differential Equations and Linear Algebra as an undergrad as received an A-. As a graduate student, I then was a teaching assistant for the course for three semester. In addition I have taken APPM 3300 - Matrix Methods and received an A. The course focuses on solving linear systems, approximation, interpolation, least squares, and matrix factorizations, in addition to a few other major linear algebra topics.
MATLAB

MATLAB

I took atleast one course each semester as an applied math undergrad and graduate student that involved use of MATLAB to model a solution or to code an algorithm. For example: Numerical Analysis 1 and 2 both involved numerical integration, differentiation and solutions to PDEs in MATLAB. Other such courses that involved heavy coding were: numerical linear alegebra, numerics, a Matlab specific coding course, radial basis functions, and many more.
Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel

I have used excel extensively in undergrad and graduate studies in applications from accounting, to numerical analysis and statistical applications. I know how to code in VBA, and well as create in-cell functions to achieve specific goals. My extensive programming and mathematical background lend themselves well to the efficient use of Excel.
Physics

Physics

As an Applied Math grad student, most problems we tackled came from a physics background. As an undergrad and high school student I took 4 physics courses and labs. Physics and calculus in high school led me into the applied math track in college.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalculus contains all the tools of mathematics that I have honed over years of study and teaching. Topics such as function definitions, transformations, log rules, exponents, partial fractions, and factoring techniques all come back in higher level math courses such as calculus and differential equations. I have spent countless years working with each of these ideas.
Statistics

Statistics

I have taken courses as an undergraduate and graduate student at CU in applied statistics, probability and mathematical (theoretical) statistics.

College Coding

My college student said Theodore is very helpful. Assignments he was having trouble getting done before meeting with tutor were done in 30 minutes. He reported that Theodore is very helpful and plans to ask for help in another subject.
