I have thousands of hours of experience tutoring standardized tests as well as high school and college coursework. Since 2020, I have been primarily using Wyzant's platform to use the best possible practices and materials to offer customized programs for each of my students. My experience is primarily in the SAT, ACT, school subjects, LSAT, GMAT, and GRE.

Prospective LSAT and GMAT students: please let me know your current score, goal score, and test date! These are the most important things to know when planning a program.

For school subjects, please bring as much information as possible about the course - the syllabus, recent assignments, upcoming due dates - as different teachers will approach the same subject in very different ways.

I am a 2011 graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park (Biology, Ecology and Evolution). From 2011 until 2020, I worked as a tutor at tutoring companies and agencies in Fairfax County, VA, Montgomery County, MD and Washington DC! I began as an SAT tutor, but soon expanded my repertoire to include a wide range of school subjects, including math, chemistry, physics, biology, composition, college applications, and high school admission prep.

In the past five years I worked to prepare the best practices possible for my programs in the LSAT, GMAT, and GRE exams. I also moved to my current location in Boulder, Colorado, where I offer lessons in person on the front range of the Rocky Mountains, or online to students everywhere.

My teaching philosophy is to get to know the material first, then get to know the student. A tutor needs both mastery of the subject in question and a good understanding of where the student is coming from. I promise to put you in a better position to succeed on your exams and papers, and more importantly to give you a better understanding of the subject and empower you to learn more yourself!

Quant: learn what fundamental skills are needed to build a base of knowledge that will get you to a solid 500, incorporate advanced skills and combinations to get to 600, then drill the hardest concepts, use estimating strategies, advanced number properties, and creative thinking to go beyond 700! We also spend time going over strategies for Data Sufficiency problems. Verbal: Learn to read quickly and thoroughly and use evidence-based answers for reading comprehension. Find conclusions and evaluate arguments in critical reasoning. For sentence correction, we talk about eliminating and using grammar rules tenaciously to get through the long, winding sentences of the GMAT. Support in integrated reasoning, essay, and the EA version of the exam also available!
GRE

GRE

There are many reasons that you might be taking the GRE -- we can work together to shore up fundamental skills in quant, build a strong vocabulary base for verbal, practice reading comprehension tactics, or explore the toughest concepts in both sections if you are seeking perfection! I have been working with GRE students of all backgrounds for the past few years, and can adjust our focus depending on what you are trying to get out of this exam. Whether you need to hit a score cutoff for a particular program or just want to see the best that you can do, send me a message about your situation and I'll be happy to help.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

I base my lessons in ACT English on years of experience with different tutoring companies, and I can bring you the most important rules to know to raise your ACT score, leaving out all the filler sometimes found in prep guides. I have based my lessons on tests out of the official ACT book and companion materials by third party publishers. I can teach you about the most common error types on this section of the test, from punctuation and subject verb agreement to word choice and passage organization.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

ACT Reading is the section that students have the most trouble finishing, in my experience. When I teach this topic, I focus on reading strategies and take a look at what you should expect from the questions. My approach to teaching this subject is not too different from how I teach reading in general - I try to find the author's point (often known as the main idea) first, and then figure out how he or she is using details to support this idea.
SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

There's more to the SAT reading section than just memorizing vocabulary. I have worked with students on close reading techniques championed by some other independent tutors whom I greatly respect. I can share their techniques with you as well as what I have learned in the past few years working with students of all score levels.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

I've been teaching the SAT Writing and Language section since it was reworked in 2015! I can show you the ins and outs of idioms, subject-verb agreement, and diction, while also helping you write an excellent timed essay.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

The fundamental concepts of Algebra are essential to the rest of high school math, as well as chemistry, biology, computer science, and physics. You will not only use these ideas in the rest of your time in school, but also in real life. For this reason, it is very important that working with "x" and finding slope become second nature, and I think that my time tutoring Algebra 1 students has given me insight into how to get these ideas across.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

The grab bag of tough new topics that is Algebra 2 can be daunting for any student. Whether you're learning about statistics, probability, algebra, polynomials, or trigonometry, there's usually something that will make you scratch your head. I have taught students who took Algebra 2 at a variety of Fairfax County (VA) schools, working with students who were doing general Algebra 2, honors, and the especially strenuous courses offered at magnet and some private schools. I think that I can help you, whatever version you are taking.
Biology,

Biology

I am a professional tutor who originally majored in biology at the University of Maryland. During my ten years of tutoring, I have worked with biology students at the high school level (including AP and IB) as well as in college courses (mostly the first two or three semesters of main sequence biology classes). Let me know what has been challenging about the course and we can pick up with review and explanation to give the concepts more context and clarity!
Chemistry,

Chemistry

Can you convert from miles to kilometers, and show your work? Do you know what a mole is? Many general chemistry students' troubles begin with these two questions. Once you learn the art of showing your work and figuring out significant figures, you have some firm ground to stand on while you take on more advanced chemistry problems. I have taught students both general chemistry and AP chemistry, and I know that chemistry is a course that some students fear the mere mention of. It doesn't have to be that way; with some intensive study of the basics and a little memorization, chemistry can be just like adding and subtracting - intuitive!
Geometry,

Geometry

When I started tutoring, I wasn't sure that Geometry was going to be my strength. As it turned out that so many students struggle with this class, though, I got to work on reviewing the old not-so-favorites: proofs, angles, triangles, circles, trigonometry... and I realized that they were not as bad as I had remembered! This more recent review helps me to see the student's point of view as a learner, and the years of experience since then have helped me to find multiple ways to explain all the typical topics in geometry.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalculus is one of those school subjects that covers a diverse range of topics, and over the years I've honed my ability to walk through each one with students. Whether we have to talk about trigonometry, imaginary numbers, radicals, or limits and continuity, I am always working to make things straightforward and as interesting as possible. In addition to my time tutoring this subject on Wyzant, I have hundreds of hours of experience working with students in my previous employment at tutoring companies.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

If you are taking the new, digital form of the SAT in 2024 and beyond, I can help understand strategies for the section-adaptive modules of this test format. I also have over a decade of experience helping students with the math content of the test, which is mostly the same in the new test. Whether you want to make a long-term study plan, or just get some help right before the exam, we can work together to build lasting understanding of crucial math concepts and SAT strategies!

ACT Math,

ACT Math

ACT Math is more of an endurance test than the SAT - many questions in little time. The good news is that it is more of a broad survey of content, asking simple, direct questions about a wide variety of topics. I have been working with students on ACT math since 2012, and can help zero in on important topics to learn, methods to answer questions faster, and strategies to make smart guesses when needed.

I worked for 3 years tutoring in Northern Virginia, and encountered students who needed help with the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests on several occasions. Every core class in a Virginia public school is associated with certain standards, and the SOL tests are designed to see if students adequately meet those standards. SOLs before high school are not often seen as important, but some public schools use them for placement, especially in math tracks. I have worked with students before to formulate a plan to meet the standards in time for a test. High school SOL tests raise the stakes, because a certain number of SOL tests must be passed to get a high school diploma. I have instructed students on their way to taking Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, Biology Chemistry, World History, and US History high school SOL tests.

Great with testing strategies!

Nate worked with me on the LSAT for about two months and he was so helpful. I learned a lot about the way the test operates and the best way to improve based on my individual strengths and weaknesses. My practice test scores reflect this change in knowledge and hopefully my real test will as well! Thanks for all your help!

Patient and helpful but never overbearing.

I learned i squared = -1 and so many other little nuances that I did not remember from before. His profile made me come in with an open mind and optimism and I can say confidently I wasn't disappointed.
