Bio

As a tutor, I strive to find the intrinsic love of learning in each student to keep learning fun! I have been a licensed teacher in Early Childhood Special Education since 1999. Since then, I have taught, consulted, and tutored students with and without special needs ages 3 1/2 to 24. My students have had Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and Dysgraphia. I am familiar with Orton-Gillingham as well as Lindamood-Bell Methods. In 2006, I added a Literacy and Math endorsement to my license. I am TESOL...

I have over 5 years experience working with students with Aspergers and Autism to help them learn to communicate and participate in a typical school day. I am licensed to teach Special Education in Colorado for ages 0-8 with endorsements in literacy and math. I have had over a decade of experience with ages 2-23 as a tutor, consultant, and teacher.

I have experience working with students with Dyslexia and using phonics and Orton Gillingham techniques to help them learn to read. Children feel success as readers with hands on activities designed to keep reading fun! I have Special Education as well as reading and writing certifications on my teaching license.

For over 5 years I have taught reading, writing and math to students who are also learning English as a second language. I teach using only English with games and stories to help students enjoy and excel at their learning pursuits.

I have used Handwriting Without Tears and other methods including textured paper to support proper technique for handwriting. I encourage students to start at the top of the letter as well as think of the shapes in the letters as balls and bats. Some letters have tails that go under the bottom line.

I have successfully used instruction of word families and blends to build phonemic awareness in developing readers with and without Dyslexia. Games and word activities are fun ways to help students associate consonant and vowel combinations with appropriate spelling. Writing activities reinforce the learning while improving spelling and reading.

Reading

Literacy is such a crucial skill! Reading can be fun and is best taught when paired with writing. My experience includes students with Dyslexia. I prefer using phonics, spelling rules, using root words, prefixes and suffixes to find word meanings. I have also taught reading comprehension.

My experience includes working with children with various needs and challenges including Autism, ADD, ADHD, and Down's Syndrome to name a few. I also have a Colorado Teaching license in Special Education for ages 2-23.

My yoga certification in Ahimsa Yoga was earned in January of 2014. I have been teaching children and their families yoga since then. Learning can happen at any moment in any pose!

Amazing tutor

Hillery is a FANTASTIC English tutor. As an immigrant from China, my son Adrian has some special needs on English reading and writing. Hillery has been tutoring Adrian since his 3rd grade in 2016. Under her symmetrical tutoring through these 2 years, Adrian made great progress in his English study and more importantly, established confidence of communicating with his classmates and teachers. Hillery is patient and developed a trusting relationship with Adrian. I can't say enough about how talented Hillery is in connecting and working with students.
