I’m John Dirkmaat, a current PhD student at CU Boulder with a B.S. in Physics and a strong background in physics, math, scientific programming, and STEM education. I offer friendly, concept-focused tutoring for students who want clearer explanations, better problem-solving strategies, and more confidence in challenging technical courses.
I tutor physics and math at the college level, including College Physics, Classical Mechanics, Electricity & Magnetism, Quantum Mechanics, AP Physics, AP Calculus, Calculus I–III, Linear Algebra, Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations, and Scientific Programming. I also support high school-level science, math, programming, and engineering coursework.
My approach is patient, clear, and personalized. I focus on helping students understand the ideas behind the equations instead of only memorizing procedures. Sessions can be used for homework support, exam preparation, conceptual review, problem-solving practice, lab/course support, or long-term skill building. I aim to explain difficult topics in multiple ways and adjust to each student’s learning style.
I have served as an undergraduate teaching assistant for six physics courses, received an Award for Undergraduate TA Excellence, and completed coursework in Physics Education/Pedagogy. These experiences shaped how I teach: structured, encouraging, and focused on real understanding.
Hourly rates are course/content dependent, but I do my best to keep them affordable!
I’d be happy to help you work through tough concepts, prepare for exams, and build confidence in physics, math, programming, or STEM coursework.
