Bio

I am a kind and patient math tutor who is passionate about making math feel more accessible. I graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Carleton College with a 3.99 GPA. While in college, I majored in Math and tutored students one-on-one and in small groups at Carleton’s Math Skills Center. Most of the time, I would work with students on Calculus, Statistics, and Linear Algebra, but I occasionally helped students in more advanced classes like Discrete Mathematics or Real Analysis.

I have also tutored high school students as they were preparing for the ACT and SAT (my ACT composite score was 35, and I scored a 5 on the AP Calculus A/B exam). In sessions, I focused on teaching math content and test-taking strategies including for the ACT Science section.

My other experience working directly with students was as an assistant group leader at the Ely Center (Needham, MA), a speech therapy/social learning center for neurodiverse kids and young adults. I learned Social Thinking and social pragmatics concepts and taught these both one-on-one and in small groups.

I believe that building confidence in math is so important because there will always be times when you feel stuck and unsure of how to proceed with a problem, and breakthroughs often require the confidence to try an approach without being certain you are on the “right” track. During my time as a student, I had a lot of experience being tutored myself, and I think that helps me put myself in the student’s shoes. I know how it feels to struggle with a subject in school and feel frustrated that things seem to “click” for others but not for you. I was lucky enough to work with several passionate and kind tutors over the years, and because of these experiences, it is very important to me to be non-judgmental and supportive as a tutor. I believe that there is always another way to look at a concept in math, so if my student doesn’t understand something the way I explained it at first, I am committed to finding another one that works better for them.
