Hi all! I'm Niah, a former middle school ELA teacher turned environmental specialist with an extensive background in tutoring writing and reading. I graduated summa cum laude with two Bachelor's degrees, one in Criminology and the other in English Literature. I like to help students feel comfortable asking questions, while still supporting and leading them to the answer.

At my university I worked in our writing center where I presented at regional and national research conferences with this work. I also coauthored a journal article that will be published next year. My research and philosophy with tutoring have been focused on the participatory and reciprocal nature of tutoring. I love establishing long-term relationships with students, watching them grow over the course of many writing assignments (or many drafts of one medical school essay!). Working on personal statements is one of the greatest honors of my tenure as a tutor, as students trust me with their stories and we work together to craft the best essay possible.

While tutoring writing for my university's writing center I worked with students on projects ranging from lab reports, reading comprehension assignments, linguistics homework, medical school personal statements, literary essays, resumes, and so much more.

Feel free to reach out with any questions or to schedule a lesson! :)

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I received a 5 on the AP Stats and AP Calculus exams, and I know algebra is fundamental to that. I tutored algebra at a private tutoring company before Wyzant and worked with many students.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have experience from a formal tutoring company tutoring K-12 math, and beyond that, I've worked with students on math in addition to English through Wyzant. Splitting a 1 hour session with ELA and math is a great way to round out your student's skills!
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

Tutoring ESL in my university's Writing Center for the last two years. I'm good at explaining grammar and catching patterns of 'errors' in writing.
Literature

Literature

Graduated summa cum laude in English Literature and presented research at a conference.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

For the past 6 years I have helped students apply to medical school, graduate programs, and more by crafting strong personal statements and supplementary writings. I know the importance of telling a cohesive story--while still being under the character/word count. I help students craft unique statements that stand out among the applicant pool, and I meet writers where they are at with their individual needs and concerns.
Reading

Reading

I have taught reading for middle schoolers for the past two years. Beyond that, I have tutored numerous elementary students to improve their fluency and comprehension.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

For the past 4 years I have helped students with their dissertations from inception to publication. Whether it's refining the APA formatting or restructuring sections, I can help you get closer to defending your thesis. I have worked with dissertations in the engineering, education, nursing, and English fields.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Through my 3 years of teaching I have prioritized vocabulary instruction. Building a better vocabulary is crucial for better reading and writing skills.

Knowledgeable, honest, organized, kind, patient, OUTSTANDING tutor.

If you’re looking for an honest, hard-working, and well-educated tutor, I wholeheartedly recommend Niah. She has been an integral part of my academic journey during my master’s program in theology. Niah is not only smart but also genuinely caring and invested in her students' success. Her noble, patient, and effective tutoring style has transformed the way I write and cite my papers. Niah goes above and beyond to accommodate her students’ schedules and is always open to understanding their academic needs. She truly cares about helping her students achieve outstanding outcomes. I can confidently say that I never received less than an A on my papers (and I had countless!), thanks to her exceptional guidance and support! If I had to do this all over again, I would choose her without hesitation—every penny spent on her tutoring is worth it! One of the qualities that set Niah apart is her ability to listen. She takes the time to read through each paper with great attention, working to understand what I’m trying to convey to the reader. Her thoughtful feedback and ability to guide me toward expressing my ideas clearly have made a significant impact on my work. Even when she wasn’t familiar with certain topics or references in theology, Niah took the extra time to learn about them and help me cite them correctly in Chicago Manual Style. I am profoundly grateful for the time, care, and help Niah has provided whenever I sought her assistance. She has always been responsive to my messages and questions in Wyzant, never hesitating to offer clarity, support, and encouragement. Her flexibility in scheduling sessions has been a true blessing, and I am immensely thankful for how accommodating she has been throughout these five months. I will miss my tutoring sessions, but I am also happy to be graduating in May 2025! I have no doubt that you will have a positive tutoring experience with Niah. She is a wonderful person and an exceptional tutor. I wish you all the best in your studies; it's all worth it in the end! Thank you, Niah, and God bless you for all you do for others! =)

Highly recommend-very good with our 11 year old!

Our son is grasping the concepts and learning how to slow down his work. He has challenges but she works patiently and thoroughly with him. His confidence has improved. Niah is very patient, understanding, flexible, and reliable.

Outstanding

Niah was an enormous help with my research assignment. She is extremely knowledgeable and made the sessions completely individualized. We discussed my specific ideas as well as obstacles I was experiencing. She provided direct and concrete solutions and helped me to implement them in to the assignment. I can use this experience on all papers moving forward and I am immensely grateful. I’ve recommended her to my entire class already! She’s also personable, kind, relaxed and overall just creates a very positive environment in the face of challenging school work. Cannot recommend Niah enough!

Flexible and Communicative

I was in the final stages of preparing my dissertation manuscript and wanted to get it proofread before sending to my chair. From the start, Niah was incredibly flexible and communicative. We found a great rhythm working together. I would send her sections of the text, while I was still editing others, and then we would swap. It was a great flow. She kept me in the loop on her schedule and I was able to do the same. I have already recommended her to another classmate! If you want a tutor who will meet you where you are, and will work alongside you, Niah is it! 5 ⭐️!
