About Lena

Hello and welcome!

I am an English tutor and a writing coach with an English degree and a teaching license. Since graduating from Boston College, I have helped students of all ages reach their language goals, be they writing an articulate essay, analyzing literature, or mastering the reading and writing sections of the ACT & SAT. My students enjoy my lessons because I care and relate to them and also because each lesson is structured to meet their unique needs.

Just as a doctor learns about her patient’s symptoms, finds the underlying problem, and treats it, so too I get to know my students—their strengths and weaknesses— and design a course of study that fits their needs. As a middle school English teacher of eight years, I understand that each student is different, and in a classroom of 30, it is difficult to engage every child. One-on-one tutoring allows me to help my students in a way that works for them.

During our sessions, my students begin to enjoy literature as they see connections between themselves and the stories they read. They also become engaged writers once they notice that the seemingly daunting task of composing a narrative or essay can be broken down into parts. Indeed, my lessons will help your student become a confident reader and writer.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The English section of the ACT tends to be the easiest one to master. I methodically teach or review all conventions that the ACT tests. I then have the students practice answering test questions until they successfully apply their grammar knowledge in a multiple choice context.

ACT Reading

The reading section of the ACT tends to be the most difficult one. In preparing my students to score as many point as possible, we determine a strategy that will work for them. We begin by identifying the type of writing that is easiest for them to understand. For many, this happens to be the prose fiction passage. I urge the students to start with the passage they find most accessible and spend more time on it. This is a way to score the most points. We also analyze question types and learn how to effectively tackle them. During our time together, my students discover a strategy that will help them reach their best score.

Dyslexia

I have worked with a number of students with dyslexia and have had great success with them. I found that teaching parts of speech and how they function in a sentence is very helpful for dyslexic students. I then teach students how to construct different sentence types and how to structure an effective paragraph. During the course of our sessions, students with dyslexia grow into confident and skilled writers.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a Master's degree in education and have worked as a teacher and tutor for the past nine years. During this this time, I have taught sixth grade creative writing and book club electives where students discovered their joy for reading and for writing. I have also tutored elementary-aged students in reading, grammar, spelling, and writing. When tutoring, I have helped students decode words, visualize events in a story, construct sentences, and write descriptive paragraphs.

English

I have been teaching English language arts classes and tutoring for the past nine years. I also hold a Bachelor’s degree in English and philosophy and a Master’s degree in Education.

Grammar

I have taught units on comma usage, parallel structure, active and passive voice, subject-verb agreement, apostrophe usage, sentence types, pronoun agreement and clarity, and prepositions and prepositional phrases. In working with my students, I help them polish their writing with these grammatical concepts in mind.

Literature

Reading and analyzing literature is my passion. I have taught the following texts to my high and middle school students: Lord of the Flies, Romeo and Juliet, To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, The Scarlet Letter, Animal Farm, Tangerine, The Giver, The Pearl, Our Town, Miracle Worker, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Call of the Wild, Fahrenheit 451, Of Mice and Men, Monster, The Catcher in the Rye, and others.

Proofreading

If your student needs someone to help him/her edit a college entrance essay or another major writing assignment, I would certainly be able help with content development, organization, and sentence structure.

Reading

I help younger children decode words, visualize events in a story, and connect with characters and themes. I also teach older students how to close read passages, understand their hidden meaning, and support their interpretation with specific evidence.

SAT Reading

The SAT reading section consists of sentence completion and reading questions. In preparing my students to take this test, we first discuss various strategies they can use such as recognizing and using triggers words. I help my students create a study plan for memorizing vocabulary words, and we practice tackling the difficult reading passages. Regardless of the student's level, we find strategies that will help him or her be successful.

Study Skills

I am qualified to help students develop study skills as I have worked as a tutor and teacher for the past eight years. During this time, I have instructed my students in being organized, developing good study habits, and finding successful ways to prepare for tests. I helped children organize their binders so they keep track of their papers and have encouraged them to have a daily planner and write down all assignments. I have taught middle school students how to take Cornell Notes and how to study from them for the test. Similarly, I have coached students in breaking up large portions of material into manageable parts, testing one's knowledge of this material, and showing one's knowledge in a test situation.

Vocabulary

Reading helps my students expand their vocabulary. When reading passages together, we discuss unfamiliar words and use the context to determine their meaning. I also find the Wordly Wise books useful in teaching the connotations of words as well as Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

Writing

I would love to help your son or daughter improve his or her writing skills. In teaching writing, I break up the process into manageable parts. We brainstorm ideas, look for evidence, create an outline, draft, and then revise. Your student will learn that writing takes time, and that a truly good paper requires a lot of effort and patience. Furthermore, your student will learn how to structure and write a variety of papers and will have a ready approach for most prompts. I have had great success in helping students express their ideas on paper.

Raised my daughter's English ACT score by 6 points

My daughter had taken the ACT two times but it was still not as high as we would have liked. We went to Lena to assist in raising her English score. They met twice a week for three weeks, we have now received the results and my daughter raised her English score by six points and the overall score went up two points. We were very happy with Lena and definitely recommend her.
