Having studied several foreign languages myself, I am well acquainted with the challenges that can arise when trying to learn and communicate in a non-native language. My students usually comment on my abundant patience and tendency to bend over backwards to make the subject matter clear and understandable. I am greatly invested in my students' success!
I am a recently-retired professor of Spanish, having taught at the college level for 17 years. Prior to that, I taught in supplemental classes for home schooled students, and as a substitute teacher in the public school system.
Whether you want some basic Spanish for travel, or desire to learn and grow in conversational ability, I look forward to working with you. Are you thinking about enrolling in a formal high school or college Spanish class in the near future but wonder how you'll do? A few tutoring sessions beforehand are a great way to introduce you to the foundational basics of the language and boost your confidence.
I believe that learning a language must include opportunities to be exposed to grammar, speaking, listening and writing, and I strive to provide all of these in my lessons with students; however, I am happy to tailor tutorial sessions to a student's needs if they express that they are struggling in a certain area. I see the student (and parent, when applicable) as the one who will set the direction for tutoring. If a certain approach is not working, I invite feedback from students, so we can make needed alterations.
Through years of teaching experience (including home schooling my four children), I can assure you I have learned flexibility and creativity in my teaching approaches! I look forward to meeting you and beginning our tutoring sessions!
