Hello! My name is Peyton and I am an experienced and passionate tutor. I have 8 years of experience teaching middle school, high school, and college-level writing and English. I have also worked full-time as a test prep tutor, specializing in test prep (GRE, SAT, and ACT).

I graduated Summa Cum Laude in December 2012 from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where I majored in English, Creative Writing, and Education. I then earned my Masters in Writing at the University of Arizona, where I taught first-year Rhetoric and Composition. After earning my Masters, I worked full time as a test-prep tutor, where I designed GRE preparation materials, and taught SAT and ACT classes. I currently teach 11th grade English in Denver and continue to tutor in-person and online.

I believe that every student learns differently and needs individualized support to meet their academic goals. My approach to tutoring is to work closely with my students to set challenging goals, to design fun and engaging ways to meet these goals, and to ultimately equip students with skills and strategies not only to succeed on a single test or in a certain class, but to truly become more stronger learners. Whether we are practicing elementary long division, reviewing punctuation rules for the SAT, or tackling challenging GRE math problems, I focus on building the confidence and skills necessary to help my students succeed.

In addition to planning and tailoring engaging lessons to meet your needs, I make sure that I research and practice the tests that I tutor to make sure that I am as experienced and up-to-date as possible. My current test scores include:
- GRE: Verbal - 169 (99th percentile), Quantitative - 164 (86th percentile), Analytical Writing - 5.5 (98th percentile)
- ACT: 34
- AP Composition: 5
- AP Literature: 5
- AP Statistics: 5

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

My goal as an algebra tutor is to help your student really "get" algebra, since algebra is truly the basis of all math! I have over a years experience tutoring Algebra 1. As a high school student, I made As in all of my Algebra classes, and I even went on to take (and ace) Algebra-based physics in college. I tailor my Algebra tutoring to meet the specific needs of the student--whether that is helping with homework, preparing for a test, or working slowly and carefully through a problem. I can also provide supplementary materials to help your student succeed!
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

Math is the basis for some much of life! But we all know that it can be a bit confusing at times. My goal as a math tutor is not only to help your student succeed on their homework and tests, but to really help them "get" math. I will begin our session with some diagnostic work, to figure out your student's strengths and struggles. I then tailor curriculum to meet their needs. I like to use a combination of the student's school work and other supplementary materials that I can provide to help your student develop a greater understanding and skill in their math. Most importantly, I keep all my lessons engaging and fun! Math is awesome, once you have the skills you need to figure it out.
English

English

I obtained my degree in English from the University of Colorado at Boulder and have spent the last two years teaching English at the middle and high school level. I have experience teaching advanced English skills such as reading analysis and analytical writing. I also have experience teaching the basics of English, both to younger children and to English language learners.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

In addition to teaching English language learners in the traditional classroom setting, I have experience tutoring ESL one-on-one. I have mostly worked with Spanish and French speakers who are looking to learn English. I have worked with students at a variety of levels (some who are nearly fluent and others who are just beginning to learn English) and of a variety of ages (grade 6 through adult). When tutoring ESL, I use a variety of methods, but make sure that my lessons are engaging and relevant to my students' lives.
Grammar

Grammar

I love teaching grammar! As an English Major and Teacher, I consider myself somewhat of a grammar fanatic. I have tons of experience both proofreading for grammar, and teaching grammar to whole classrooms and individual students. As a grammar tutor, I work with student to improve their grammar in their current writing assignments. I also provide supplementary materials to help students develop skills to be better grammar experts in their future educational careers. My goal as a grammar tutor is to help your student improve their grammar and build skills to proofread and recognize effective and ineffective grammar in their own writing and in the writing of others. As always, my grammar tutoring is fun and rigorous. We will work hard, improve quickly, and have fun doing it!
Literature

Literature

My goal as a literature tutor is to inspire and equip your student with the skills to understand both the basics and complexities of the written word. I love Literature so much that I studied English in college and trained to be an English teacher. I am passionate about literature, but also understand that literature can be confusing and difficult. I have over 700 hours of experience teaching literature in the middle/high school classroom. I can work with your student to make literature accessible, meaningful, and even exciting. My approach to tutoring literature is to combine discussion, close reading, and responsive writing. I will work with your student to meet their goals. Whether you need help making sense of the themes in Moby Dick, want to get an A on your next literature paper, or just can't figure out how to write a sonnet, I can help!
Proofreading

Proofreading

Everyone can use a little help with proofreading! As an English teacher, and as an English major, I have proofread everything - college essays, blog posts, even writing by professional writers! As a proofreading tutor, I will work with your student not only to proofread their work, but to help them develop their own proofreading skills! I use a combination of your students' writing and supplementary materials. We will work on proofreading for grammar, as well as style, content, and organization. If you are looking to ace your next paper for your English class or write an incredible college entrance essay, I can help you get there!
Reading

Reading

I truly believe that reading is the most important skill you can develop in your life! Reading is everything! I also know that everyone reads differently. As a reading tutor, I will work with your student to diagnose strengths and weaknesses. I will then tailor curriculum to meet these needs, while also being fun and engaging. I have worked in a Struggling Readers workshop at the high school level, where I tutored one-on-one with students struggling in reading comprehension, fluency, and word-recognition. I have also planned and taught fun reading and writing curriculum for Elementary students. I have tons of fun supplementary materials that will help your student become a better reader, no matter what their specific strengths and struggles are.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

Prior to moving to Tucson, I taught SAT and ACT classes for Lake Washington Tutoring in Seattle. I have experiencing teaching one-on-one and small group classes designed to prepare you to master this test!
Spelling

Spelling

Spelling is one of the most basic subjects in school, but it is also one of the most difficult! Spelling does not come easily to everyone - it did not come easily to me! As a spelling tutor, I will help your student learn their spelling words, but I will also help them develop skills for becoming a better speller. What spelling really comes down to is learning the patterns of sounds and letters in our language. My goal as a spelling tutor is to work closely with your student to first diagnose strengths and weaknesses, and then tailor curriculum to meet their needs and give them skills to succeed in their spelling. Some people think that spelling is boring memorization...but not my tutoring! I keep spelling lessons engaging and fun with a combination of games, exercises, and (of course) working on the students school-related spelling and writing.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Ever felt like the word you needed was on the tip of your tongue? Ever wanted to impress your peers (or the college admittance board) with your extensive vocabulary? Ever just struggled understanding the book you are reading because your don't know all the words? If so, I can help. As an English teacher, I have tons of experience teaching vocabulary. I have taught Vocabulary at the basic level of learning sight words and figuring out context clues. I have taught Vocabulary at the college level, where I help students prepare for the AP, SAT and ACT exams. I recently took the GRE and scored in the 96th percentile on my the reading and Vocabulary section! No matter what your strengths and weaknesses are, I can help you improve your vocabulary. I have worked with all ages of students, from Elementary to College. As a Vocabulary tutor, my goal is to first figure out what you need to work on, and then plan lessons that meet your needs and help you develop strategies for success. For some students, I will focus on word recognition and developing strategies for figuring out what words mean in the context they are in. For other students, I will work on college-level vocabulary and high-stakes test preparation, through engaging but rigorous activities and tests. No matter what your vocabulary needs are, I am here to help!
Writing

Writing

Writing is my absolute favorite subject! I studied creative writing as both an undergraduate and graduate student. As a teacher, I specialize in teaching writing - everything from college essays to research papers to poetry. No matter what writing you struggle with, or what writing you love, I can help you. I have experience with all levels of writing and have taught writing at the middle, high school, and college levels! My goal as a writing tutor is to inspire both a love for writing, and also an understanding of the basics. I focus on structure, content, organization, and mechanics, but combine these elements with creative and fun exercises. As a tutor, I like to use a combination of your students' school work and supplementary exercises that I can provide. If your student needs to improve their writing (and wants to have fun doing it), then I am your tutor!
