With more than 30 years of professional journalism and marketing experience, I can teach students how to write creatively, effectively, and succinctly. Good writing grabs attention quickly and holds the reader captive from start to finish. I earned my bachelor's degree in journalism and honed my craft while working for the Associated Press and the Rocky Mountain News. I am currently the managing editor for a creative marketing team, and I take pride in producing engaging presentations, brochures, flyers, emails, and social media posts.
While I've never been a formal tutor, I've been helping others improve their writing for three decades. I regularly served as a desk editor as part of my assignments for the AP, and I acted as the primary editor for my two oldest children as they worked their way through high school. One is now in law school, while the other is attending one of our nation's military academies.
When students work with me, they will learn the importance of a strong opening statement. In journalism, we called this the lede (no, that's not a misspelling). In marketing, we call it the hook. If you can't get the reader past the opening paragraph, you're toast. Students will also learn the beauty of "tight writing." Most times, a message can be conveyed in 75 words instead of 100, Teachers and professors will thank them for not padding a paper just for the sake of reaching a word count.
I am an expert in AP style and preach consistency of voice, grammar, and tone. Everyone thinks they can write. When students use me as a tutor, I'll make sure they really can.
