Bio

Hi! My name is Sean P, I'm a 20-year-old from Arvada, Colorado, and I'm a junior at CU Boulder studying applied mathematics! I started playing chess just under 4 years ago during the pandemic, beginning as a 400 rated rapid player. I quickly fell in love with the game, and have worked hard through self-study in my own time to increase my rating in different time controls. Since then, I've reached ratings of over 2400 in Rapid (10 minute), Blitz (3 minute) and Bullet (1 minute) on chess.com,...

I started playing chess just under 4 years ago during the pandemic, beginning as a 400 rated rapid player. I quickly fell in love with the game, and have worked hard through self-study in my own time to increase my rating in different time controls. Since then, I've reached ratings of over 2400 in Rapid (10 minute), Blitz (3 minute) and Bullet (1 minute) on chess.com, as well as 2400 Rapid and Blitz, and 2500 Bullet on lichess.org. I've learned so much along the way. I also have a USCF over-the-board rating of 2020, which I expect to continue rising as I play in more official tournaments.

Alongside chess and math, I also have a passion for teaching, and have 2 years of experience teaching both math and computer science to children through summer camps. I love watching a concept "click" when a student finally understands a problem, and I believe that I am adaptable to each student and can teach an idea in whatever way is easiest for the student to grasp. I now have over 300 hours tutoring chess on Wyzant, and I love watching my students improve.

As your coach, I will start by playing you to understand your playing style, strengths and weaknesses. We will work together to build an opening repertoire that uses your strengths and suits your style, and through practice, we will work to eliminate your weaknesses so that you become a better overall player! I will also place an emphasis on particular topics of importance based on your rating to help you climb the ladder quicker, and give you an idea of what you can work on during your own time if you are truly dedicated to improvement!

All ages and skill levels welcome, I love to teach kids as well as adult learners!

I've achieved ratings of over 2300 in Rapid, and 2200 in Blitz and Bullet on Chess.com, as well as ratings of over 2400 in Rapid and Bullet, and 2300 Blitz on lichess.org. I started playing chess 3 years ago as a 400 rated player and have reached these ratings on my own through hard-work, perseverance, and self-study. I also have a provisional over the board rating of ~1900 through my first 15 games, and look forward to achieving an official over the board rating this summer when I travel to more tournaments!

Fun and friendly chess tutor

I signed my son up with lessons with Sean because he was interested in learning the basics of chess. After the first lesson, my son immediately said he wanted to do more. Sean makes the lessons fun, and my son is learning chess strategy while having a good time.

chess AND math!!!

Sean we feel so fortunate to have found you on Wyzant! Your chess teaching has been a blast for Ian and now I see that you can help us with math. I really look forward to more sessions in both subjects with you. His math homework will be over my head at this point (ugh). Thanks!

Sean is great

very knowledgable and patient. We study chess. Sean has ideas for how to improve a student's skills, but is also flexible and willing to accommodate any learning requests I have.

Great!! đź’Ż

We worked on middle game. Sean is very knowledgeable about the material and very encouraging. We talked about blunders and how to look for opportunities to advance your own pieces without making mistakes and while staying up in material. As well as opportunities to gain material after certain trades. Looking forward to more lessons 10/10 recommend.
