I have a commitment to supporting student success that began as a teenager and has continued well into my professional life. For ten years now, I have tutored students ranging from kindergarten to college, in both paid and volunteer contexts, particularly in the subjects of reading and writing. I now develop, teach, and grade my own courses at UCLA in the political science department. I have a bachelor’s degree from UC Riverside, a master’s degree from UCLA, and am working on my PhD at this time. I have tutored both in person and virtually, and have spent years developing the tools, language, and methods to help students vastly improve their writing process and outcomes.
I believe that tutoring is as much about understanding and connecting with your students as it is about knowledge of the topic. What makes me an effective tutor is that I not only have extensive proficiency in my subject matter, but that I also have the experience and dedication to find the methods and tools that each student needs to succeed. Students learn in different ways and require different types of support, and as a tutor that is passionate about helping my students achieve the best possible outcome, I work hard to personalize the tutoring experience for each student.
I approach tutoring as a dialogue, where both myself and my student provide important information and input. I believe my job is to provide structure and tools for students and then encourage them to grow and flourish with these resources. Truly successful tutoring involves not just helping students get a good score on an assignment, but also ensuring that they have developed a true understanding of a subject matter and the confidence to continue to learn and grow.
