Hello, my name is James and I am thrilled to potentially be your newest tutor! I am a graduate of California State University Northridge, where I have received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and, most recently, a teaching credential in English at the Secondary level. In other words, I am qualified to teach English at the middle and high school level. I have a semester of experience at each level, student teaching at Portola Middle School in Tarzana, CA and Calabasas High School in Calabasas, CA. As I prepare to find a permanent teaching position in the fall, I am currently working with students via one-on-one tutoring sessions to help them achieve their goals in studying English Language Arts.
Education is my greatest personal passion. I am a firm believer in maintaining a growth mindset, and will encourage the development of my students through constructive feedback, differentiated lessons, and providing a generally positive environment in which students feel comfortable to learn. Most importantly, I want to know what helps you, the student, learn so that I can help you achieve your goals.
My experiences both in the classroom and in one-on-one tutoring environments have given me a broad understanding of what helps students master the content of their English classes. As a graduate of the California State University Northridge English Literature program, I am intimately familiar with what teachers look for in student work to show understanding of the subject matter. Beyond that, I am highly enthusiastic about teaching students how to write academically, and am dedicated to helping my students reach their potential as writers. Thinking critically about and writing in response to literature is something that I have a vast amount of experience in both as a student and an educator.
Please feel free to contact me via Wyzant so that we can discuss scheduling a lesson. I look forward to working with you!
