About Gavin

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA and graduated from University of Hawaii at Manoa in May 2012 with a BS in Meteorology and a Minor in Mathematics. I have recently finished my Master's in Applied Meteorology at Mississippi State University in 2014 and recently finished a professional certificate in Geographic Information Systems in 2016. Throughout my education, I have gained a background in Chemistry, Physics, and of course Math. Ever since I was young, Math has been one of my favorite subjects and it is evident in my experiences. I have always helped my friends in Math when growing up, whether it be Algebra or Calculus. I started getting paid for it during college when I tutored students in Pre-Calculus to upper level Calculus courses. I have tutored students that are Engineering majors to those going into law. Teaching a huge array of people that come from different backgrounds, I have to tutor in a way that everyone is able to understand. Additionally, my degree in Meteorology helps those that are in Chemistry and Physics as the fundamentals of meteorology require a background in these fields. Whether it be kinematics or gas laws, all of these fit into the structure of the field; though most students come to me for help in Math. My approach with students is to try to work with them to solve the problems. I show them the basics of their questions and work from there to help them fully comprehend what the questions want you to do. I need to show the students how to solve the problems on their own. That way, when a test comes around they will know the concepts and how to solve their problems for themselves. I try to make it fun like a puzzle that needs to be solved. I know problems can be frustrating when you don't get the right answers, but my job is to give them the knowledge and confidence to not only solve the problems at hand, but also to incorporate these assets in their everyday lives. In my free time, I enjoy going hiking to see the magnificent views the world has to offer! I also love seeing amazing weather phenomena, video games, being outdoors, and having a good time with friends and family.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Differential Equations

I have taken quite a few courses in not just differential equations but also in partial differential equations. You also learn the fundamentals in Calculus, but I feel comfortable in tutoring Differential Equations for those that are taking undergraduate courses or in Calculus.

ISEE

I have tutored many students in taking the ISEE in the past. I help each student at their own pace in each section that includes verbal, mathematics, and writing skills.

Linear Algebra

I have taken multiple courses in the field of Linear Algebra and feel quite comfortable in tutoring Linear Algebra. It is a fun course to not only tutor but also to learn and is very influential in computer programming.

Poker

I have played in quite a few poker tournaments in the past. I understand the probability and rules of the game and have won a few tournaments myself. I go over all the various strategies in bluffing, betting, and playing the odds.

SAT Math

My students have raised their scores significantly after their tutoring with me. I have gotten my Masters in physical science and a minor mathematics with coursework beyond Calculus.

Study Skills

I have worked with various students at organizing their time and efficiency to best yield their time wisely. This includes study habits, time management with extracurricular activities, and even day to day habits to assure they are doing everything they can to maximize their energy towards different subjects.

Tennis

I was on the tennis team in high school. I have played for about 20 years now and grew up with the sport around me. I try to cater to the what the athlete needs, whether it be focusing on ground strokes, volleys, or serves.
