Whether working with AP students or private school students whose high-caliber courses are simply labeled “Honors”, I am very adept at making sure students easily understand the rubrics used with the Document-Based Question (DBQ), Free Response Questions (FRQs), Short-Answer Questions (SAQs), and other similarly designed assignments where the students must analyze documents and apply them to a challenging prompt.

I use an array of analogies that help students understand the material and enhance student understanding by not only asking “what” but also “why”. Key historical thinking skills: (cause/effect; compare/contrast; change and continuity over time) make up the core of each session.

I have taught AP US History for over 20 years, have been an AP US History Reader (grader) for the College Board/ETS since 2010, and have been an AP US History Instructor for the UCLA AP Readiness program for seven years. Prior to that, I taught IBS Asian & European History, and IBH History of the Americas for 13 years.

Having grown up in New England, with continued travel on the East Coast over the years, I bring a first-hand knowledge of those regions. Although the colonial and New Nation time periods have always been of keen interest, most recently I have been quite obsessed with using the antebellum era. My 13-years teaching the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum in the Asian Pacific region, and master’s research into the colonial experiences of Micronesia and the rest of Asia and the Pacific, not only enhanced my understanding of World History, but also gave me a much clearer understanding of US foreign policy in the 20th century. Since 2003, I have lived on the West Coast and have come to better appreciate the experiences of Latin Americans, Native Americans, and Asian American in the US, the frontier mindset of American settlers, and the amazing flourishing that took place here in the 20th century, especially after the significant migration of Americans to the southwest after WWII.

American History

I have been an AP US History Teacher for 20 years, and an ETS/College Board AP US History Reader since 2010. Additionally, I am one of four UCLA AP US History Readiness Instructors in the city of Los Angeles. My three decades growing up in New England, combined with 13 years teaching in Guam, and 20 years in California, brings a unique perspective and understanding of US History.
Social Studies

Social Studies

Besides extensive work teaching the following courses: IB Asian & European History; IBH History of the Americas; and AP US History, I have also taught US Government and Economics.
World History

World History

I spent the first 13 years of my career as an IB History teacher (IBH History of the Americas; IBS Asian and European History). In the years since then, I have regularly taught World History in addition to my normal load of AP US History classes. Living in the Asian-Pacific region for 13 years (and frequent travels there since) has not only enhanced my knowledge of that region, but also the motivations and actions of Europeans from the 1500's onward. My MA in Micronesian Studies and focus on East Asian History in the 19th and 20th centuries as an IBS Asian & European History teacher has been a large focal point in my life. The IB History of the America's course I taught for many years in the 1990s involved teaching the histories of Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Cuba, the US, and in particular, the United States' foreign policy in regards to those countries. My main European focus as an IB Asian & European History teacher was on issues related to colonial expansion, and the main economic and political threads from the 1800s that led to WWI. This was followed by in-depth research into the rise and rule of Hitler, and all events related to the causes/effects of WWII in Europe.

Excellent Tutor!

Scott has been a phenomenal tutor throughout the year I have been working with him. He is incredibly patient, and motivating, and always responds to my questions very quickly throughout the week. He is incredibly knowledgeable and makes complex subject matter easy to grasp. I felt fully prepared for the AP Exam, and I highly recommend Scott to anyone looking for extra support in AP U.S. History.

Phenomenal Tutor!

Scott prepared me for the AP exam very well. He maximized the time during our sessions. He had an abundant amount of helpful resources. Ultimately, why Scott was such a great tutor was because he was very knowledgeable about the content, and he explained the material in a way that was extremely conducive to my learning. I would recommend Scott as a tutor to anyone!

Excellent!

Scott is an outstanding AP U.S. History tutor. He helped me clearly understand complex topics like the causes and effects of the Civil War, the impact of the New Deal, the roles of federal programs created to help America recover from the Great Depression, and the reasons many of those programs were later disbanded. He also made it easier to connect key themes like federalism and civil rights across different time periods. His support with SAQs, LEQs, and DBQs really boosted my writing and confidence. I felt so much more prepared for the AP exam thanks to his expert guidance. Highly recommend!

Great tutor!

Scott is an extremely knowledgeable tutor! He is also very accomodating- my son needed to reschedule several sessions due to his high school sports schedule and Scott was always very prompt in responding and working with him to try and find an alternate time to meet. Highly recommend for APUSH tutoring!

Knowledgeable, personable tutor!

I started working with Scott near the beginning of the school year after I was unable to quickly adjust to the pace and depth of APUSH alone. He is excellent in bridging current understanding and making sure that important details are not overlooked. He has many review materials and responds quickly regarding rescheduling lessons etc. Furthermore, the pace of each session allows him to cover a lot of material, while also being flexible for me to ask questions when I need clarification or want to confirm my understanding. In addition, Scott is very personable, so tutoring sessions do not feel like a lecture, but rather are something that I look forward to. Through his help, I was able to raise my grade at school by 4%, and developed a solid understanding of each unit and the continuity and change regarding different topics. I would absolutely recommend him as a tutor, he is amazing!!

Exceptionally brilliant!

We can’t say enough wonderful things about Scott. Our son worked with him throughout the academic year. We didn’t want someone who just tutors for an hour and hands out homework on a loop. We wanted someone who would be involved and took charge of ours son’s APUSH prep. We found Scott. Scott is an exceptional and gifted tutor who is just as invested in your child’s success as you are. He is very accessible, leaves copious notes after each lesson, his teaching methodology is well structured and he is involved every step of the way. Great strategy. Highly motivational. Excellent communication. Just brilliant! The fact is that APUSH is tough. Scott makes it a cake walk! He is a fountain of knowledge and his understanding of American History is profound. Being a grader he knows exactly what the student should focus on and how to do it. He breaks down what skills you need on the exam and finds ways of making the course curriculum interesting/easy to grasp. He shares important resources, review materials, advises on the best reference books and is always ready to answer queries. His lessons are helpful in developing historical thinking skills besides preparing students for the exam and helping school grades. Our son’s goal was to not just to do well in class or the AP Exam but to develop a deep understanding of America’s history and its spirit. Scott’s own appreciation for history and knowledge helped immensely with that. Our son truly enjoyed his sessions and saying it greatly helped would be an understatement! Thank you, Scott!

Amazing tutor!

I first started working with Mr. Mercer when my grade in AP U.S. History was struggling. With his help, I was able to improve my understanding of the material and strengthen my writing skills, especially for the DBQ and LEQ. He was consistently responsive and flexible with scheduling, which made it easier to keep up during busy times. By the end of the course, I had raised my grade to an A, and I feel very confident about earning a high score on the AP exam. I'm grateful for his support throughout the year.

A Truly Exceptional Tutor

Our daughter worked with Scott throughout the school year for AP U.S. History, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the impact he had. He has a real talent for making the material clear, engaging, and easier to navigate. His support made a noticeable difference in both her understanding of the subject and her performance in the class. She genuinely enjoyed working with him each week, which made the experience even more positive. Scott was always responsive and accommodating at times when we needed to adjust the schedule. Thanks to Scott, our daughter is going into the AP exam feeling well-prepared and genuinely interested in the material. We highly recommend him to any student looking for a supportive, knowledgeable, and genuinely engaging tutor.
