Hi, I’m Miao! I have a B.S. and M.S. in Biomedical Engineering and an M.S. in Biotechnology, with additional training in medical sciences. My academic background includes extensive coursework in biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, mathematics, psychology, and biomedical sciences. I have also spent years working in biomedical and neuroscience research and have contributed to 20+ peer-reviewed scientific publications. I scored in the 97th percentile on both the Bio/Biochem and Chem/Phys sections of the MCAT and in the 85th percentile on Psych/Soc.
I began tutoring STEM subjects as a college student through university academic tutoring programs, helping undergraduate students with their coursework, and continued tutoring during graduate school. In research settings, I have also mentored undergraduate students and lab trainees, teaching scientific concepts and hands-on research methods, particularly in biology and wet-lab research. More recently, I have taught students one-on-one online, working with learners from different academic and professional backgrounds.
My teaching style emphasizes understanding rather than memorization. I use diagrams, analogies, and step-by-step explanations to break complex ideas into manageable pieces and help students move from analyzing a problem to understanding the underlying concept and applying it independently. I am especially interested in tutoring college-level biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, math, psychology, biomedical sciences, MCAT science, and scientific reading. I am bilingual in English and Mandarin and can use Mandarin to clarify difficult concepts when helpful.
