I like to get to know each student's unique circumstances and challenges so I can best help them to reach their goals. I find that a little encouragement, humor, and patience on my part goes a long way in reassuring them they can succeed in class.

For the last 20 years I have especially enjoyed helping middle- and high-school students earn higher test scores, get better class grades, and increase their self-confidence. I have taught students from K-12 in private tutoring centers, one-on-one and in small groups of 5-12, and worked as a substitute teacher in two different districts. I was qualified and asked to serve as the long-term sub for two classes, Integrated Math I and regular chemistry.

I earned my teaching certificate as a student teacher in chemistry. I also qualified, by testing, to teach math, middle-school math thru Algebra 2 (does not include trigonometry, math analysis, nor calculus). The past few years I have been working for a private tutoring company, but I’ve enjoyed the same joys that teaching can bring.

Please feel free to let me know what your goal(s) for each tutoring session is/are. I can help with homework, preview material, review material, prep for tests, and give you additional practice. Please give me at least a 4-hour notice if you need to cancel. I understand that schedules can get complicated. I look forward to meeting you soon. Mel

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I can teach these Algebra I concepts: equations including systems; inequalities; polynomial operations; linear, quadratic, rational and exponential functions including graphing; arithmetic and geometric sequences and formulas; data and displays. I have taught in both the traditional Algebra I format and the Integrated Math blended format. I earned a teaching certificate for "foundational math" up through Algebra 2.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I can teach these Algebra 2 concepts: complex numbers, quadratic equations, polynomial functions, radical functions, rational (fraction) exponents, exponential functions, logarithms, rational functions, sequences and series, trigonometry, probability, and statistics. I have taught both regular and honors-level Algebra 2. I earned a teaching certificate for "foundational math" up through Algebra 2.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I earned a Single Subject Teaching Credential in chemistry while student teaching and then tutored chemistry for a private company. I have taught these concepts: atoms, isotopes, and ions; atomic models; periodic table trends; chemical bonding; geometry of molecules; chemical reactions; stoichiometry (the math of reactions); states of matter (properties of solids, liquids, and gases); thermochemistry (energy changes); solutions; acids and bases; redox reactions; reaction rates; equilibrium; nuclear chemistry; basic organic functional groups. I can also help with any associated lab writeups.
Geometry

Geometry

I can teach these geometry concepts: reasoning and proofs (2-column, paragraph, and flowchart); parallel and perpendicular lines; transformations of graphs; properties of triangles and quadrilaterals; apothem; similar figures; trigonometry; circles; circumference, area, and volume; constructions (compass and straight edge); probability. Many students are shocked by geometry proofs, but they can succeed by truly understanding the relevant postulates and theorems. I earned a teaching certificate for "foundational math" up through Algebra 2.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I can teach these Prealgebra concepts: integers, expressions, equations including linear, inequalities, proportions and scale, transformations of graphs, percents, scale, area, surface area, volume, triangles, Pythagorean Theorem, exponents and scientific notation, probability and statistics. I have taught both Common Core and accelerated or honors-level Prealgebra. I earned a teaching certificate for "foundational math" up through Algebra 2.
