GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
As an undergraduate student at Florida International University (FIU) from 2001 to 2005, I often found myself tutoring my study groups in several subject areas, from Biochemistry to advanced Calculus, which greatly helped my performance in each class. By my senior year, I obtained a teaching assistantship for a graduate level class on Computational Modeling of Cellular Systems, which was a challenging course that combined advanced math and cell biology for engineering students. I was the first ever undergraduate student to teach a graduate course at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at FIU.

As a PhD student at UC Berkeley from 2006 to 2012, I assisted in developing the curriculum and teaching several Bioengineering and Physics courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels for engineering and science students, many of whom were freshmen and sophomores. In my thesis research laboratory, I mentored many small groups of undergraduate and graduate students on hands-on techniques as well as designing and performing experiments with minimal supervision. I also participated in several undergraduate and graduate student mentoring programs at UC Berkeley, which included group seminar presentations as well as one-on-one tutoring sessions of students from science and engineering majors, including minority students. I actually co-founded the Bioengineering Advising Representatives Program in the Bioengineering department at UC Berkeley with the goal of coaching undergraduate students interested in graduate school how to best prepare for the application process and the challenges faced as they pursue advanced degrees.

APPROACH TO TUTORING: There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to learning. Different students will respond better to one style of teaching versus another. My job as a tutor is to find out what teaching style or presentation will make my student comprehend the subject at hand better. First, I try to find out what sparks the interest in the student and then try to r

Biochemistry

Biochemistry

Biochemistry was a required class for my BS in Biomedical Engineering. I organized and led a study group that helped my colleagues do well in the class. I was the only student in the class to get an A that semester. I was also the head Graduate Student Instructor for the Intro to Bioengineering class at UC Berkeley. I have been applying and teaching what I learned in that Biochemistry class for more than 14 years now.
Biology

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint

I use Microsoft PowerPoint weekly to create professional presentations aimed at other scientists at the research institute where I work. I have trained several students over the years on how to use Microsoft PowerPoint to craft impressive presentations for maximum impact.
Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

I use word processors, including Microsoft Word, daily to prepare professional reports aimed at other scientists at the research institute where I work. I have also trained several students over the years on how to use Microsoft Word productively and effectively to craft professional reports complete with graphs, tables, reference, etc.
Physics

Physics

In high school I was an AP Physics student and my excellent performance on the AP exam earned me College Physics credit when I started pursuing my BS degree in Biomedical Engineering. I did take courses with a heavy advanced Physics content later on as part of other requirements for my BS degree. As an undergraduate student I did laboratory research that required application of several Physics concepts. My work culminated in a peer-reviewed publication shedding light on how cells in blood vessels operate. As a graduate student at UC Berkeley, I was a graduate student instructor at the Physics department, which is home to several Nobel Laureates in the field. I also took courses that required advanced knowledge of Physics as part of requirements for completion of my Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering.
Portuguese

Portuguese

I was born and raised in Brazil. I moved to the US when I was only 16 years old, but basically all of my formative years were taught in Portuguese. I have taught many students over the years to master the Portuguese language. I can help students practice conversational Portuguese as well as proofread any written work in Portuguese from students.

knowledgeable and patient tutor

Haroldo is a knowledgeable, patient, flexible, and understanding tutor. He taught me college level Physics I and II, helping me grasp difficult concepts by breaking them down clearly and effectively. He was always willing to adjust to my learning pace and schedule, and he worked through practice problems with me to prepare for exams. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for strong support in physics.

5/5 stars

Haroldo was an exceptional biochemistry tutor patient, kind, and an excellent communicator. What really stood out to me was how clearly he explained complex topics using a whiteboard and stylus. It made the learning experience so much smoother and more engaging way better than listening to endless mouse clicks! He has a real gift for teaching. He broke things down visually, drawing out concepts that helped me truly understand the material on a deeper level. You can tell he’s incredibly intelligent, and he genuinely cares about helping students succeed. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to learn biochemistry or honestly, anything. He’s that good. Best of luck to anyone lucky enough to work with him!

very knowledgeable, understanding, and explanatory tutor

I started with Haroldo in around January/February of this year and continued with him through May until the end of AP tests for AP Physics. I went from getting 60s-70s on my tests and quizzes to 80s-90s. Anytime I thought I had a stupid question, he would tell me that all my questions are valid and he always explained them to the extent I needed. He was very patient and knowledgeable too. I would 100% recommend him to future people looking for a knowledgeable tutor.

Knowledge, patient and effective Tutor

Haroldo taught me chemistry this term and was great! I was concerned about the class as I did not have a strong background. He took his time in each session and was always very flexible. I did much better on my exams than I expected and it was most definitely thanks to his support. I HIGHLY recommend him to anyone looking for a tutor!

Communicates well, Patient and Solidifies Lesson

Exceptional. Son’s second lesson with Haroldo this time for Algebra 2. Haroldo was prompt and communicates clearly. My son really appreciates Haroldo’s ability to explain and expand on the material. My son GREATLY appreciated that Haroldo would ask if he understood what was just explained before moving forward. Looking forward to securing future lessons. Thank you, Haroldo.

Communicates well, Patient and Solidifies Lesson

Communicated with Haroldo via messages in advance of lesson to express what I was looking for in a long term tutor. Haroldo was prompt and communicates clearly. He is personable. My son has only had one lesson in Chemistry (prep for Stoichiometry exam) thus far, but what my son really appreciated was his patience and his ability to explain and expand on the material. My son GREATLY appreciated that Haroldo would ask if he understood what was just explained before moving forward. Looking forward to securing future lessons. Thank you, Haroldo.
