Hello! I have been tutoring since 2011 and a credentialed teacher since 2014. I've literally taught coast-to-coast, starting off in Boston and Newark, NJ before moving to the Bay Area. I have had the pleasure to teach students from just about every background and ability level. Most recently, I taught at Vista High School in Richmond, an independent study school at which each student has a Supervising Teacher (aka tutor!) to help them create a work schedule and tutor them in all of their subjects. I especially enjoyed the opportunities to form close bonds with my students and to tutor *every* high school subject.

My keys to success are empathy and humor. I think of my students as people first, and learners second: everyone learns best when they feel happy and safe. Beyond that, however, we're all unique! That's why listen to my students and pay close attention to figure out their learning style and make our tutoring sessions both enjoyable and productive.

I am confident with all subjects, but am most effective as a writing teacher. After just a few months, I am able to teach my students how to write clear, organized essays that include strong evidence and convincing arguments. By year's end, each of them can confidently walk themselves through the entire writing process, from research to final draft.

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

I have tutored all sections of the ACT before. My versatility makes me unique--I am an excellent writer, but because of my economics degree and love of science, I am highly qualified to tutor those sections as well.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I taught a year of Algebra I in Newark, NJ for a year and since then have tutored algebra to a number of students. I pride myself on my ability to explain problems clearly and to break them down into their components to clearly identify and then strengthen students' weak areas.
American History

American History

As of May 20, I earned my master's degree in social studies education from the Curry School of Education at UVA. I am a history fanatic and am excellent at helping with all aspects of the course--I am a fantastic editor for both style and substance and also know how to make study guides and schedules to help prepare for exams.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I took two years of chemistry in high school, including AP Chemistry, on which test I earned a 5 (the highest possible score). I have kept up with chemistry as a hobby since then and am therefore still perfectly qualified to help tutor high school chemistry.
GRE

GRE

I have taken the GRE, earning stellar scores, and tutored it twice. The GRE is like most standardized tests--you can be taught to do well on it. With dedicated, experienced tutoring, I can show you where and how you need to focus your studying and then pinpoint your biggest challenges to help you earn the best grade possible. My scores: Verbal Reasoning: 168/170, 98% Quantitative Reasoning: 166/170, 94% Analytical Writing: 5.5/6, 96%
Macroeconomics

Macroeconomics

I majored in economics at Vassar College, where I focused on microeconomics and economic history. My major GPA was a 3.58.

Writing

Writing

I love writing. I edit friends' theses for fun, write essays, poetry, short stories, scripts, and am even finishing up writing the game manual to a board game I'm publishing. At Vassar, I interacted daily with brilliant professors whose first job was to turn us into thinkers, and whose second job was to give us the writing skills needed to express our thoughts on paper. I therefore spent 2006-2010 getting one of the best writing educations money can buy, and I'm always eager to use my skills to help others' writing. This, I believe, is one of the reasons I am such a great editor: I enjoy taking a piece of writing and making it as concise and clear as possible. Finally, I have the experience editing to support my passion: I edited my high school newspaper, copy edited for an economics magazine, and have been a writing tutor for nearly a decade.

I hired Jared to prep my daughter for the SAT's this summer. Jared is a highly intelligent young man with great communication skills. Not only was he patient he created an environment that was motivating and fun. Jared was reliable and prompt for every session. I can recommend this tutor without reservation and wish him the best of luck in his next endeavors.

Great tutor

Jared has been very helpful in my Harvard ECON class. Ever since the first day he's been on time and he always explained the topics greatly. He is very friendly and this just makes it easier to learn the subject with him. Also, it has always been easy to contact him and set up times. He is very flexible with time changes. The five sessions I had with him have been very beneficial. I would recommend Jared to all students.
