About Tim J.

Bio

Hello! My name is Tim, and I have a passion for demystifying math and making it accessible (and fun!) to students at all levels. I have been tutoring middle school, high school and college math for 15 years. My tutoring experience includes: Elementary Math, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, AP Calculus AB, and AP Calculus BC. I have helped students prepare for COOP/HSPT, PSAT, SAT Math, and ACT Math tests. I have also tutored undergraduate linear algebra.

I bring my industry background in electrical engineering and computer science to problem-solving. I benefited from excellent tutors in my past, and I understand the value of making math less intimidating and more approachable for learners.

My approach to tutoring begins with reviewing materials students provide – e.g., graded homework, exam reviews, course syllabus. This helps me understand the context and create a game plan. In the tutoring session we set modest goals and work through problems together in a non-judgmental fashion. Each session is tailored to the student’s current skill level and needs. Once a foundation is set, I slowly introduce challenge problems that help students stretch their thinking. Students I have tutored consistently score very well on homework/tests, attain top marks on AP exams, and routinely earn SAT and ACT scores in the top 3% of all test takers.

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University, have pursued a graduate degree in Computer Science at Stanford University (36 units of coursework, 3.8 GPA), and earned an MBA from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business (3.9 GPA).

Let’s work together to achieve your academic goals: better grades, higher test scores, and mastery of difficult material. I love one-on-one tutoring because I’ve seen firsthand that every student has the capacity to improve. With patience and practice, students build real confidence.

I look forward to helping you understand math! You can do this!

ACT Math

ACT Math

Though ACT Math can feel puzzling and challenging, I believe many students can improve their math and test-taking skills to show solid improvement. I have helped students scoring in the 20’s attain scores above 32. By applying steady focus on specific math topics, practice yields results. I can work with you to reach your highest ACT goals!
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Hello! Algebra can appear confusing and tricky - radicals, quadratics, polynomials, sequences, oh, and word problems. I have taught algebra for over 15 years, and can demystify new concepts and help you make great progress in Algebra. Also, if we happen to come across any arithmetic topics you need to review, we can work those too!
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is a critical course serving as an onramp to trigonometry, precalculus, and the SAT/ACT. My tutoring encourages a dialogue about topics to find any areas of weakness that need to be addressed. Your student will gain methodical problem-solving skills to strengthen their understanding and improve their grades. Book with me today!
Calculus

Calculus

Calculus is challenging. My tutoring approach is supportive and methodical. With patience and practice, students improve their conceptual understanding while we build up any weaknesses we come across (trigonometry, algebra, etc.). Student homework and grades improve; most in AP Calculus AB and BC earn 4s and 5s. Let’s work on your Calculus challenges together!
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

Everyone can improve at math - it's true! I have over 15 years tutoring mathematics to K-12 students. With patience, practice, and encouragement, my students improve and build self-confidence.
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry is more graphical than most other math courses - it comes with a plenty of shapes and manipulations. My tutoring involves lots of drawing shapes so that students get comfortable picking up a paper and pen and playing around. Though proofs can be challenging, most problems yield when approached methodically. Let's work together on Geometry - please contact me!
Interview Prep

Interview Prep

For both startups and large enterprises, I have conducted over 100 interviews in my career. My approach to helping with job interviews adds knowledge, builds confidence, and greatly increases your chances of a landing that job. I am also a mock interview volunteer at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business – helping MBA students develop skills and behaviors for their upcoming management consulting, business development, and product management interviews. Let's work together to build a great foundation for all of your interviews in the future.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is a foundational math course. I bring positivity and enthusiasm to the tutoring process, helping student receptivity and willingness to try. Please contact me and let's set up a schedule to help out your student!
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalculus touches on quite a variety of topics, which often causes confusion and anxiety. I bring positivity to the tutoring process and help students' willingness to try (and make plenty of mistakes!). Students then begin to develop a sense of experimentation and grow their self-confidence. Let's help your student improve in Precalculus - please contact me today!
PSAT

PSAT

Working to improve PSAT scores will yield dividends as your student experiences an increasing number of standardized tests in high school. Introducing a bit of rigor in a supportive setting increases student self-confidence and outcomes. I would appreciate the opportunity to work with your student on their PSAT.
SAT Math

SAT Math

Though SAT Math is quirky and challenging, I believe many students can improve their math and test-taking skills to show solid improvement. I have helped students scoring in the 500-600 range attain scores above 700. By applying steady focus on specific math topics, practice yields results. I can work with you to reach your highest SAT goals!
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is abstract - with new, confusing notation - and a leap for all students. Learning the unit circle, trig identities and functions, and polar coordinates can feel very confusing. By moving slowly and methodically, we demystify these new concepts while getting at any root issues, quite often revealing areas of foundational weakness. That's OK! Learning is all about getting better at the things you are not yet good at. I would love to help you with your trig!
