I studied English Literature at UC Berkeley receiving my Bachelor's and Master's degree. I was enrolled in the PhD program there, with a specialization in Victorian Literature and Social History and was advanced to candidacy, but did not complete my dissertation, because I left to take care of my two young children. While at Berkeley I taught classical rhetoric, English 1A/1B and worked as a trainer for other English 1A/1B instructors.

We were a homeschooling family since we lived in a small rural town here in California. Our family also did foster care and my youngest son was adopted after he came to us as a foster baby. While my children were growing, I taught English at Woodland Community College, worked at Woodland Adult Education as a high school subjects and GED teacher, and taught a GATE Science class at Grafton Elementary School. I later went back to school at California State University, Chico to receive my K-12 teaching credential where I became fascinated with how children learn to read.
My second career was working for California State Parks as a Parks Interpretive Specialist teaching Junior Ranger Programs, 4th Grade overnight programs at state historical sites, and giving tours of historical sites and leading nature hikes and doing campfire programs. I also did private tutoring for homeschooled elementary and high school students, ESL learners, and a Vietnamese Priest who worked in the diocese of Sacramento.
I enjoy working with all ages of students on reading, grammar, writing, and the study of literature. In my spare time, I take long hikes with my dog, Winnie, and enjoy spinning, knitting, weaving, sewing, reading and writing poetry.
