My work with youth programs since 2008 and experience in tutoring, along with my studies as a psychology major (Psychology Bachelor of Arts, UCSC) and my work in public and private school settings as a tutor, teacher and music/theater director, have given me valuable insight and skills essential to fostering students' acquisition and utilization of knowledge. I believe we all learn in different ways and at different rates, and I aim to vary my methods of teaching based on each individual's needs while maintaining structure and cohesion to my lesson plans.

From a young age, I have also exhibited a passion and aptitude for music, and I enjoy sharing this love and knowledge of music with persons of all ages and skill levels, offering lessons in voice, violin, theory, guitar, ukulele, and piano, while also offering tutoring in math, writing skills, and a variety of other subjects, including psychology, and feminist theory. I have been passionate about teaching since I was first asked to tutor a fellow kindergartener in counting and math skills. I love to show people how things work, breaking down work into simple steps, while guiding them to utilize such processes and critical thinking in applying acquired knowledge to new problems and concepts. I hope to bring all my skills to the table to help you or your student succeed.

Bible Studies

Bible Studies

I was raised Roman Catholic and also participated in bible study groups from other Christian denominations. I began attending CCD, confraternity of Christian doctrine, at 4 years old, when I entered kindergarten. This was followed by youth groups and confirmation classes in which I learned about the Bible, theology, and church doctrine. After graduating high school in 2008, I worked as a youth group leader assistant for high school and junior high youth groups, planning fun and educational games and activities and assisting in facilitating discussions on the Bible and more. For a year between community college and attending UCSC, I ran the junior high and high school youth programs for St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church in San Jose. Duties included meeting with teachers and staff and organizing and approving lesson plans for the confirmation classes and planning and facilitating discussions and activities for the youth group. My own personal study of the Bible was greatly enriched through assisting with and attending such classes and groups. Aside from this work, I have been able to attend adult Bible studies, such as a women's Bible study in San Luis Obispo and a co-ed adult through Mountain Brook Community Church in San Luis Obispo, adult religious education enrichment forums at Mission San Luis Obispo, retreats, Bible studies and prayer groups through Newman Catholic groups, a college class on "The Bible as Literature", and continued meditation and study on the Bible through attendance at various churches, including Peace United Church of Christ in Santa Cruz, where I am currently a member. My work in a "discipleship" program, in which members met one-on-one to discuss the Bible was also greatly educational. I love leading group discussions, as well as working with individuals as they grow in their knowledge of the Bible. I like to pull from supplemental sources, as well, helping to put the Bible in historical context and reflecting on teachings and interpretations from pastors, priests, scholars, e

I have developed my own personal ear through years of work with various instructors, as a musician, and through courses beginning in elementary school and continuing in college at Cuesta Community College in San Luis Obispo. I began tutoring students in music while I was in high school, 2006, as well as leading choir sectionals, and have continued tutoring in various capacities, incorporating ear training and music theory in lessons for voice, violin, guitar, ukulele, and piano.

General Music

General Music

I started learning music around the age of 4, picking up various instruments throughout the years. I love explaining basic theory concepts to beginners, as well as working with more advanced students on theory and applications. Since a young age, I have exhibited a passion and aptitude for music, and I enjoy sharing this love and knowledge of music with persons of all ages and skill levels, offering lessons in voice, violin, theory, guitar, ukulele, and piano. I studied under George White in theory and violin from 1997-2001 while also performing with district honor orchestra annually, and I also studied and performed violin and French horn under Michael Stone while performing in an award winning marching band, district honor orchestra and honor band, and receiving Command Performance, the highest ranking in a musical competition for my performance with a small wind ensemble. I have performed in and soloed with, as well as leading rehearsals in directors' absences and holding the position of section leader in, numerous choirs and received high marks in choral and solo competitions, studying under such notable directors as Gary Lamprecht of the Vocal Arts Ensemble. Upon graduating high school, I received multiple fine arts scholarships and began working as a professional musician including through my employment as a cantor with the Diocese of Monterey while furthering my musical studies at Cuesta College.
Geometry

Geometry

I have tutored elementary through college math and have taught geometry and algebra classes.
Guitar

Guitar

My mother began teaching me guitar basics, such as strum patterns, when I was in elementary school. Though I focused more on voice, violin, and piano until college, I began receiving one-on-one lessons in 2009 and was quickly able to begin performing with guitar in a singer-songwriter style. I have since expanded my skills and taught students basics such as posture, chord structures, scales, reading tabs and sheet music, rhythm, various strum and finger-picking patterns, and more. I love helping students to develop their skills and knowledge of this instrument while working on learning songs they love. I believe music theory and ear training are also very important components to guitar lessons. However, I realize some wish to read music while others simply want to learn a couple basics so they can strum along with some favorite songs, and I am able to adapt lessons to students' goals and interests. My methods have also varied depending on the students' background knowledge and learning styles. I have successfully and comfortably worked with ages 8 and up, beginning to intermediate, and seen much improvement with my students, sometimes even in just the first lesson.
Piano

Piano

My grandmother and aunt began teaching me basic piano skills when I was in elementary school, and I continued such skills in musical theory courses junior high - college. Piano has also been useful in learning and teaching voice and music theory, as well, and I continue to increase my skills with help from other musicians and Alfred's Adult Course. I have worked with students as young as 4 years old but prefer to work with beginners age 8 and above and am willing to work with some intermediate level students.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I began developing curriculum for a speech class based on a college-level public speaking textbook. I am able to adapt college-level coursework to any grade level, including units on writing a speech, types of speeches, delivery, performance anxiety and more. I have many units, slides, activities, and worksheets already developed but can also tutor using an alternate class curriculum. Whether you are preparing to speak out in the real world for a job or conference or trying to pass a middle school, high school, or college course, I can help you succeed.
Voice (Music)

Voice (Music)

Voice has been my main instrument since a very young age. I received private music lessons from my aunt, long-time vocalist and private music instructor and coaching from my grandfather, musician and record producer. I continued my education in school choirs, as a vocal performance music major at Cuesta College, where I took many music classes but then switched my major to Psychology. I have worked as a cantor for the Diocese of Monterey, led concerts and youth bands, and sang in recording sessions and on stages in various styles. I love helping students to unlock their own power and find their voice while incorporating important lessons on diaphragmatic breathing and ways to project without damaging vocal cords. I believe music theory and ear training are also very important components to voice lessons, along with basic piano skills. My methods throughout the years have varied depending on the students' goals, background knowledge, and learning styles, but I have successfully and comfortably worked with ages 8 and up, beginning to advanced, and seen much improvement with my students, sometimes even in just the first lesson.
