About Kevin

Bio

I have earned a BS in mathematics from UC Riverside (2018) as well as an MS in mathematics from CSU Channel Islands (2024).

Currently I am looking for full time employment as a community college mathematics instructor, but in the mean time, I work as a tutor for high school AVID students, and in the past I have worked as a Mathnasium tutor, a private math tutor, and a volunteer math tutor for Project Understanding.

As such, I have experience with explaining math concepts of all levels that make sense from the student's perspective, and with getting students to actually understand what they are learning, as opposed to simply memorizing formulas for a test.

I prefer to tutor in advanced math subjects, starting with Calculus or Trigonometry and anything beyond at the college or advanced high school level. My methods include having open discussions about math concepts and why they work the way they do, as well as working through examples and homework problems at a pace that is appropriate for the student.

I am also knowledgeable in select topics of physics and computer science/programming, which allow me to help students with applied math problems or projects.

I am comfortable around technology, so the online experience will most likely be very smooth.

Please reach out if you think I am a good tutor fit for you. Include what level of math you need help with and what you expect to gain from receiving tutoring help.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

5+ years of tutoring experience with high school students taking math 1, math 2, and math 3, all of which include aspects of Algebra 1.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

5+ years of tutoring experience with high school students who are learning math 1, math 2, and math 3, all of which have aspects of Algebra 2 in their material.
Calculus

Calculus

Calculus is taught at the end of high school or at the beginning of college, and is an essential part of every math student's foundational skills going forward into more advanced math courses. I probably think about calculus at least once per day, and look forward to sharing my knowledge of its subject matter with students.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

Discrete mathematics is an area whose title is a synonym with mathematical logic or proofs. This material is used throughout the field of mathematics, covers things such as truth tables, introductory set theory, and proofs by induction, and is one which I have had to use in all of my upper division and graduate courses.
Finite Math

Finite Math

Finite mathematics typically covers material that is of importance to statistics, business, or other social sciences. Some of these topics include matrix algebra, statistical or probabilistic analysis, and the creation of general mathematical models from a given problem set or data. I have taken and passed undergraduate courses in linear algebra and statistics, as well as graduate courses in markov chains/processes, which include this material as part of their subject matter.
Geometry

Geometry

5+ years of tutoring experience with high school students who are learning math 1, math 2, and math 3, all of which have aspects of Geometry in their material.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

Linear algebra is a required course for most STEM majors and of course for math majors. This field of math has many important applications to the sciences such as engineering, physics, and computer science. Part of my undergraduate degree in mathematics was taking and passing both an introductory linear algebra course and an upper division proof-based linear algebra course, so I understand this material well.
Physics

Physics

I have taken and passed college courses in introductory physics and classical mechanics. This material is essential for anyone looking to go on to study physics, chemistry, engineering, or math in college, or for those taking a high school physics course. Introductory physics can be done either algebra-based or calculus-based, both of which I understand.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Literally all math that is done from the high school level and beyond will rely upon the material learned in a pre-algebra course. I use this knowledge every day tutoring high school students.
Precalculus

Precalculus

5+ years of tutoring experience with high school students who are learning trigonometry and pre-calculus. Knowledge of the unit circle, the definitions and identities involving the trigonometric functions, and the preliminary material that leads into calculus.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

5+ years of tutoring experience with high school students who are learning trigonometry and pre-calculus. Knowledge of the unit circle, the definitions and identities involving the trigonometric functions, and the preliminary material that leads into calculus.
